Thinking of Remodeling Yourself by Eric Gilbert

Thinking of Remodeling by YOURSELF?!

By Eric Gilbert

I love it when, in the movie Fried Green Tomatoes, the character Evelyn Couch, played by a fiercely determined Kathy Bates, takes a large hammer in hand and wildly starts demolition on her own living room wall. It almost makes me want to take on such an adventure myself. Sure we know it’s hard work, but she makes it look so easy.

But determination and desperation are not all that is needed to take on even the smallest room in your house, say your little upstairs bathroom, and to complete it successfully. The key to completing any project on time and under budget, is knowledge, including taking stock of what your own strengths and weaknesses are.

Be sure, before you take that hammer in hand, that you weigh the pros and cons of taking on such a task. Wouldn’t it be quite an embarrassment to find you had overestimated your home improvement skills?

Consider first the time away from your family, the complexity of the physical labor, energy spent in researching the correct supplies, and the added time spent shopping for those supplies.

Consider also how much you really know about remodeling, by answering honestly the following questions:

If you answered yes to all of these questions, you may just be capable of handling a Do-It-Yourself project alone.

We all have good intentions when it comes to starting projects within our own homes, but so many times, that project grows frustrating because things are not going as planned, or it seems to be taking much longer than we thought it might. It gets put on the back burner and we are living with the mess, or avoiding that section of the house altogether.

At this point, we are ready to call in a professional just to get it done and over with. But in the long run, it will cost more for someone to come in and fix any damage we’ve done than it would have been to have hired a professional remodeler in the first place.

And while HGTV makes it appear as if you can do it in thirty minutes, and all for the price of dinner at McDonald’s – well, let’s just say you don’t want to find out the hard way!
