Answers From Behind The Chair

By Sheila Venancia

During my 14 years “behind the chair” as a hair stylist and Master Colorist I have answered many questions from my clients. I would like to share some of the more common ones. Perhaps sharing this may answer questions you have about hair care.

• I want to let my hair grow. If I trim my hair every month will it make my hair grow faster?

No. If you want your hair to grow longer, only trim it every four months. Hair grows at a rate of almost a half inch per month. If you trim it every month you are cutting away the length that just grew.

• My hair is gray and I color it. Every month I feel that I need to touch up my roots. Is my hair growing that fast or is my hair color fading?

Both. Yes, your hair grows, but sometimes the quality of the hair coloring product used is not that good, causing it to fade quickly. I would suggest that you try a different product the next time. There are many good product lines available.

• I color my hair regularly. It always turns different shades of color at the ends. Is there something I can do about this?

Yes, this problem happens when the hair gets over processed. The solution is a color correction performed by an experienced hair colorist that uses a high pigmentation and low peroxide product.

• I love my hair just after having it colored, but in a couple days much of the vibrant shine is lost. What can I do to protect my hair color?

Do not wash your hair every day. Use a shampoo that is sulfate free. Before blow drying or flat ironing your hair apply a good quality heat protection product.

• I am a very active person. I spend a lot of time at the pool, the beach and doing sports. This gives me a lot of exposure to the sun and other harmful elements. What should I do to help protect my hair?

It is very important to create a barrier around the hair to protect it from chlorine and salt. Using a sunscreen that is specifically designed for the hair will help greatly to maintain color and condition. Be sure to use a product that is water proof and contains both UVA and UVB.

• I use a dry shampoo. Is it bad for my hair?

Dry shampoo’s are not particularly good for your hair, but their occasional use is an acceptable alternative to help keep from washing your hair every day. There are times when using a dry shampoo can be both practical and helpful, especially when you travel and need to have your hair looking fresh and clean.

• I have highlights in my hair. Can I touch up the roots every month?

It is not advisable. This can result in over processing, which may damage your hair. Luckily, the fashionable trend today is to have highlights at the ends.

• Every time I brush my hair it seems that I lose a lot of hair. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

It is normal to lose about 100 strands of hair a day. More than that may be a result of poor diet, a hormone imbalance, or stress. If you are experiencing more than normal hair loss you should consult a doctor.

“Don’t forget, your hair is very important.”

Until next month!

“If you can’t say ‘I love my hair,’ you need a new hairstylist!”
