Makers United for Children’s Hope Foundation By: Nicole Carbon Photography By: Chuck Carroll & Julie Hirsch Sitting across from me one recent afternoon, dressed in normal everyday attire, was a real, live super hero. I kid you not. Meet Zachary Hurst, Founder and Executive Director of the nonprofit Makers United for Children’s Hope Foundation (MUCH), whose board members include Ben Jayko, Laurie Sore, and Joe Davison. They make magic happen by uniting experts in the medical, engineering, and technology worlds who donate their extraordinary talent to help children in need. Olivia Newton John Wellness And Healthy Living By Kimberly Burns, OTR/L, CLT “Did Sandy sell-out and become Danny’s leather clad dream or did she claim her sexuality and her inner self?” Unfortunately I did not ask this question. Too much speculation has already been made about the ending and my focus was to reach into the mind of ONJ on health and wellbeing. Live on, live on More than just survive my friend We learn how to thrive and then live on, live on Shining like the words inside this song, live on Love is all we leave when we […]

The Players Centre for Performing Arts Making Our Move! By Ed Bertha The Players Centre for Performing Arts, a 501(c)3 non-profit, is Sarasota’s first performing arts organization and the second oldest in the State of Florida. The theatre opened in 1930, in the midst of the Great Depression, with a series of one-act plays. Two hundred and eighty-one member-patrons each paid a two-dollar subscription fee for the play series. Today, The Players Centre has grown from a grassroots arts organization into a major cultural institution that touches the lives of over 75,000 people annually. Last year, The Players Centre for […]

Steve Mittleman Stand Up Comedy At Its Best Interview by Ed Bertha When LA’s Comedy Store hosted auditions for Steve Martin’s film ‘Roxanne’, dozens of great comics, Steve Mittleman included, faced a professional’s worst enemy, lack of time to prepare. The Store also had a limited number of spots for auditions. Steve stopped by anyway, someone cancelled, and he got the shot. After the auditions, the film’s producers asked for only one comedian they’d seen that evening. Before he knew it, Mittleman found himself hauling a fire hose around Canada playing the quirky fireman in Steve Martin’s hit film. Let’s […]

Giovanni Lunardi’s View of the World By Richard F. Corrigan It is said that to understand a man’s life you have to walk in his shoes. You can’t, really. But for the first time, you will be allowed to look through another man’s eyes. This is an invitation to view something you have never before been allowed to experience. It’s not scary, but it may cause you to gasp. Your jaw may drop, and you may hear yourself utter words like, “Unbelievable! Amazing! Phenomenal! WOW!” There is not any one of your friends or acquaintances you are even close to […]

James M. Towery The Art and Science of Design with Nature By Ed Bertha Photography by Giovanni Lunardi Layout by Christian Lunardi Growing up in Michigan, outside Detroit, James “Jim” Towery’s life was like so many others in The Motor City. His father worked in the automotive industry and mother in the local church. Jim could have followed his father’s footsteps, but a summer stint with a local gardener changed his trajectory. It was the love of the outdoors that set Jim’s future course, and led him to enroll at Michigan State University. Jim shares, “I’ve had an artistic flair […]

Dr. Herbert Silverstein An Ear For Music By Ed Bertha Photography by Giovanni Lunardi Layout by Christian Lunardi Medicine Raised in the center city of Philadelphia, Herbert Silverstein was the number one son in the family. His father, a Neuro-Psychiatrist and Professor at Temple University, had big ideas for the boy. On Herb’s tenth birthday, his father informed him that he was going to be a doctor. Herb recalls, “In those days you did what you were told. And back then doctors were revered.” That being said, Herb’s future was slated to become a Neuro-Surgeon because, as his father had […]

Rich Heiles East End Volleyball

It all started in 1977, when a group of avid volleyball players in Long Island took the game to a new venue: the beach. “We played coordinated events in the winter,” recalls Rich Heiles, a founding member of East End Volleyball (EEVB). As enthusiasm grew, so did participation. Tremendous talent was cultivated on those sandy courts, and beach volleyball came into its own.
