New College Hosts 15th Year Of PUSH/SUCCESS. New College is helping two dozen middle and high school students prepare for careers in medicine and science with a program that takes them out on Sarasota Bay and into the College’s marine biology labs. It’s the 15th year of PUSH/SUCCESS, a program for students from demographics typically under-represented in science. Anti-Semitism Essay Lands Adina Luft A Scholarship Award. Adina Luft, a fourth-year student at New College of Florida, is a winner of the Tampa Bay Consular Correspondent Corps’ scholarship contest for her essay on the reasons for the rise of anti-Semitism in societies. She will receive her $1,000 award from a representative of the Corps on Wednesday, Feb. 10, at 1:00 p.m. in the offices of the New College Foundation, in the Keating Center, 5800 Bay Shore Road, in Sarasota. New College Ranks 14th In Kiplinger’s Top 100 Public Colleges. For the 13th consecutive year, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance has recognized New College of Florida as one of the nation’s best values in higher education. The magazine ranked New College 14th on its list of the 100 best values in public colleges for 2016. Donal O’Shea Co-Winner Of The 2016 Leroy P. Steele Award. President Donal O’Shea of New College of Florida is a co-winner of the 2016 American Mathematical Society’s Leroy P. Steele Award for Exposition, one of the highest distinctions in mathematics. O’Shea and fellow mathematicians David Cox and John Little received the award for their 1992 book Ideals, Varieties and Algorithms. Professor Uzi Baram Receives FHC/NEH Research Grant. Uzi Baram, professor of anthropology at New College of Florida, received a $15,000 grant for a research project, “Tragedy and Survival: Bicentennial of the Southward Migration of Black Seminoles on the Florida Gulf Coast.” The “Tragedy and Survival” project stems from Baram’s successful public anthropology program “Looking for Angola,” which successfully identified traces of the 17th-century Angola community of escaped slaves, known as maroons, near Manatee Mineral Springs. Federal Research Grant Awarded To Justin Saarinen. Justin Saarinen, research scientist and geography instructor in the Environmental Studies program at New College of Florida, was awarded $105,221 in grants from the U.S. Geological Survey for a project titled “Geospatial Modeling for Prioritizing Coastal Wetland Restoration.” Saarinen and New College students will use GIS software and other technologies to develop geographic models for restoration planning along the coasts of the Great Lakes. New College Makes Fiske Guidebook To Colleges Ranking. The first of the major 2016 college guidebooks is out, and New College of Florida again starts the season ranked as a “Best Buy” college – one of just 20 public colleges in the United States to receive the designation in the respected and long-running Fiske Guide to Colleges. New College has appeared on Fiske’s “Best Buy” list since 2003. New State Budget Funds Major Projects at New College. Florida’s new budget funds two major initiatives at New College of Florida: construction of the Heiser Natural Sciences Complex expansion, and programming at the Center for Engagement and Opportunity, or CEO, the College’s career services program. The budget sets aside $3 million for the first phase of the Heiser expansion, a 22,000-square-foot addition that will increase classroom, office and laboratory space by about 50 percent.
