February 27-28, 2010 – Selby Gardens Asian Cultural Festival

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens announced the fifth annual Asian Cultural Festival to be held on February 27 and 28, 2010, from 10:00am-5:00pm. Ikebana International’s Sarasota Chapter, Sho Fu Bonsai Society of Sarasota, and the Sumi-e Society, in conjunction with Selby Gardens, will share highlights of the rich cultural traditions of the Orient with visiting guests. 
 
Opening ceremonies begin at 11:30am on February 27, 2010. Twice daily during the festival at 11:30am and 2:30pm the Matsuriza Taiko drummers will perform. Entertainment also includes a traditional Chinese Lion Dance by Tang Martial Arts Center. Kim Pham, a tea expert, will offer traditional Chinese, Japanese and Korean tea ceremonies. 
 
The festival includes ikebana demonstrations, martial arts, sumi-e brush painting, bonsai show and sale and a kimono exhibit. Guests are invited to participate in tours of the Gardens’ collection of Asian sculpture during the event. Children will celebrate the Year of the Tiger by creating fun projects including: Chinese lanterns, origami paper folding and oriental fans in the Selby Gardens’ Kid’s Corner.
 
Admission Fees: Children 11 and under are free when accompanied by an adult; Adults are $17.00. Members have free admission and Member’s guests will be charged $5.00 per person. Join Selby Gardens as a new member during this festival and receive a $10.00 discount off of the regular membership price.
 
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a respected center for research and education as well as a famous orchid showplace.  The Gardens is located at 900 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota.
