Rosemary Rising has been a holiday tradition for the past five years in the Rosemary District of Sarasota surrounding Central Avenue and Fifth Street. The free event became so popular that organizers decided to host a quarterly series of events. The “Art of Film” festival runs Saturday, April 10th, from 5pm-9pm, and possibly later. Local merchants will pull out all the stops to make it a fun-filled family evening.

Four bands and a DJ will fill the air with music, including The Equines, Completely from Mountains, Reggie William and Cassolette, courtesy of FinchHouse.com.

Catch a close-up view of body painting in action during the event. “Body painting is a new, exciting and edgy way of expressing art on a living medium,” said Amy Kaiser, one of the painters. “We will transform living canvases into film-inspired works of art right before your eyes.”

“The body painting is family friendly,” said organizer Laura Gale, owner of Everything But The Girl, a unique boutique and gallery on Central, who explained that there will be no nudity on display. “It’s a beautiful art form being used more and more in the media and advertising scene, and made even more popular recently by the movie Avatar.”

The body painting will be on display at 435 Central Ave., (the large green building at the corner of 5th and Central), along with a gallery of paintings for sale by Rosemary artists. Following the “Art of Film” theme, the streets throughout the district will be filled with costumed film characters from The Players Theatre, movie music, Hollywood memorabilia, open-air painting and movie food, such as popcorn and hot dogs. Local restaurants Derek’s, Felice’s Café and Nancy’s BBQ will provide more substantial food.

The Rosemary District in Sarasota, Florida, is bordered by Fruitville Road to the south, 10th Avenue to the north, U.S. 41 to the west and Orange Avenue to the east.
