The Marie Selby Gardens Associates presented a check for $10,000 to Selby Gardens CEO Tom Buchter at their annual meeting Monday, May 17, 2010. The gift is one of the largest donations in the support group’s history. The funds will support the Gardens’ programs of Research, Education and Horticultural Display. The mission of the Marie Selby Gardens Associates is to “serve, support, and grow the Gardens.”

Buchter lauded the group’s generosity: “The Associates reached deep into their pockets and made one of the largest donations in their 30-year history, despite this year’s difficult economy. Thank you for continuing your wholehearted support for Selby Gardens’ mission.”

The contribution capped the Selby Associates “Year of Going Green.” Going Green included switching from a printed newsletter to electronic communications and hosting “green” programs including presentations by the creator of the EarthBox and by the designer of Home and Garden TV’s 2009 Green Home. Earlier in the fiscal year, the group provided funding for a new teen volunteer program, Selby Gardens Explorers. They also underwrote the costs of holiday décor for the historic Christy Payne House, bringing their total Gardens support to almost $15,000 this year.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a respected center for research and education as well as a famous orchid showplace. The Gardens is located at 900 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota. It is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of Christmas day. For further information visit www.selby.org [2].
