Marie Selby Botanical Gardens announced the receipt of a $50,000 grant from the William G. Selby and Marie Selby Foundation. The grant will be used towards upgrading plumbing, electrical and air handling systems in the former home of the Selbys.

Built in 1921 the Selby House was the winter home of Bill and Marie Selby for many years, and Mrs. Selby continued to live there until her death in 1971. Upon her death, she left the property to Sarasota for the creation of a “botanical garden and park” for the enjoyment of the people. Selby Gardens was founded in 1973 as a center for the study of epiphytes (plants adapted to live in the forest canopy) and is recognized worldwide for its research as well as for its incredible natural beauty.

“The Selby Foundation has been incredibly generous to us over the years, and we’re delighted that they are helping to underwrite this project to preserve the Sarasota home of their founders,” said Selby CEO Tom Buchter. “These upgrades are absolutely crucial to protect this historic property, and they will also help to support our mission. The Selby House hosts a café, a reading room, and the Kids Corner classroom as well as apartments used to house interns and other visitors whose work brings them to the Gardens.”

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a respected center for research and education as well as a famous orchid showplace. The Gardens is located at 900 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota. It is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the exception of Christmas day. For further information visit www.selby.org [2].
