On February 9, 2011 from 7 to 9 pm,  the Bishop Planetarium lobbyat the South Florida Museum is transformed into the think + drink (science) cafe, a place where you can lounge on a couch, grab a beer or a glass of wine (or a soft drink) and learn about cutting-edge science in a relaxed, informal setting. Typically our “expert du jour” gives a short presentation on the topic of the month, and then opens the floor for questions and discussion. Drinks and bar snacks available for purchase. Feel free to bring food.

Biomimetics – How Nature Influences and Inspires Human Technology
February 9
7-9 pm

Join Jim Vartuli for a fascinating look at how we attempt to mimic nature in our inventions.  From cars to chemical factories to drug delivery systems, we are taking pages from nature’s playbook to develop new technologies. One hour presentation followed by an open discussion with Jim in the lounge.

About Jim: Jim Vartuli obtained his doctorate in physical chemistry and has spent his entire career as a researcher in the discovery of novel and useful materials.  He retired in 2007 from the ExxonMobil Corporate Research Center as a distinguished research scientist.  Besides enjoying, with his wife, their grandchildren and all of what Florida offers, he does some consulting for the chemical industry.

think + drink (science) is FREE and open to all ages, but the museum appreciates RSVPs so they know how many to plan for.

RSVP to Amara at 941-746-4131 ext 11 or via email at acocilovo@southfloridamuseum.org [2].
