When they dated William Pawley, Jr. was 28 while Elizabeth Taylor was 17. Pawley was the son of a wealthy American businessman who was ambassador to Peru and then Brazil from 1945-1950. Although the romance lasted less than a year, her relationship with Pawley was important because it was Taylor’s first engagement. Perhaps it was the beginning of her love affair with jewelry, since he gave Taylor her first white diamond ring. Pawley pines, “The studio broke us up.” When Taylor returned the ring her note said, “Take good care of it my darling, as my heart is embedded right there at the center of it.”
