October 4, 2011 So You Want To Be Super?

sarasota-opera-logo [1]Sarasota Opera Seeks Supers.

The Sarasota Opera is seeking enthusiastic outgoing people to serve as supers, non-singing extras in opera productions. Supers will cover the 2012 Winter Festival Season which includes productions of Bizet’s Carmen, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Verdi’s Otello and Samuel Barber’s Vanessa. Supers will take the parts of pushcart vendors, soldiers, servants, courtiers and dignitaries. Age range for these characters is from teenager to 60’s.

To be considered for a super role, you must:
•        Be physically fit
•        Be able to perform onstage without glasses
•        Be able to walk on slopes and stairs
•        Be able to wear elaborate and sometimes very heavy costumes
•        Be able to see in both dim and bright light
•        Men must be willing to shave

At this meeting, the stage directors of the productions will interview you and the costume department will take your measurements. Being a super requires both daytime and evening availability from January 15, 2012 through March 25, 2012 but it is not a daily commitment.  Some supers will not be needed for rehearsals until February.

If you are interested in volunteering your time as a super, please attend the super call on Tuesday, October 4 from 5:00pm – 6:00pm at the Sarasota Opera House. You do not need to prepare anything to attend this super call.  Just show up.  However, attending this meeting does not guarantee you a position as a super.

If you have any questions about being a super, please contact artistic administrator Greg Trupiano at gtrupiano@sarasotaopera.org [2] or by phone at 941-366-8450, ext. 534.
