Cat Depot Assists Military Families

Cat Depot announced it supported U.S. military families at Guantanamo Bay Military Base (GTMO) through its Operation Red, White and Mew program. The program, established in 2010, assists military members that have been deployed and no longer can keep their pets.

Recently, Cat Depot worked in conjunction with the GTMO Veterinary Treatment facility, as well as Maddie’s Fund, to coordinate the safe arrival of two cats from the military base to Cat Depot.

“We’ve had difficulties getting cats adopted in the USA because up until now I have been unable to find a rescue to work with.” said Miriam Lovell, DVM, CPT, GTMO Veterinary Treatment Facility. “Our clinic adopts out those we can using donations of food and litter to sustain the program. If I could take in all the cats people have tried to relinquish, we would have over 100 in the clinic now without even trying.”

Due to a recent military base policy of only two pets per household, there is an urgent need to find homes for many relinquished or abandoned animals. Calls are being received across the state by various humane organizations for assistance. However, most animal organizations are at capacity, and it is increasingly difficult to find support.

Cat Depot, a rescue, adoption, education and resource center, is dedicated to helping abandoned, homeless and injured cats and kittens with medical care, food and love.
