The doors open Friday, January 6, 2012, for a concert at St Pete’s Jannus Live with Doug E. Fresh.
Best known for his multi-platinum hits “The Show” and “La Di Da Di,” Fresh was dubbed the “world’s greatest entertainer.” He’s rocked crowds for 20 years since his musical career began at age 13. The originator of the human beat box was also the first rapper to play Africa and the Caribbean, pioneering the popularity of hip-hop all over the globe.
As a hands-on board member of The Artists Empowerment Coalition, Fresh is a hip-hop activist fighting against issues such as, racism, drugs, and illiteracy. ”Hip-hop is supposed to uplift and create, to educate people on a larger level and to make a change. Hip-hop artists need to grow to use it like that, not just to get some paper,” says Fresh. “People can look to me as a teacher, but I consider myself a student of hip-hop. I’m forever learning and that’s why I’m always able to create new styles and new dimensions of hip-hop.”
Fresh has performed and recorded with some of the world’s top artists in rap and hip-hop including Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Eminem, P. Diddy and Dr. Dre. He has also worked with artists in reggae and R&B such as, Beenie man, Prince and Stevie Wonder and nurtured rising talent including Slick Rick and P. Diddy.
