Handcrafted or Handmade?

If you’re into any aspect of art or crafting I would guess you’ve had this discussion before. So what do the experts say?

American Heritage Dictionary: Handmade; made or prepared by hand rather than by machine. Handcrafted; to fashion or make by hand.

Merriam Webster: Handmade; made by hand or by a hand process. Handcrafted; to fashion by handicraft.

Webster: Handmade; made by hand or a hand process. Handcrafted; a work produced by hand labor.

Do you notice a difference? Does it matter? Let’s explore them both together.

Starting off we motor to St. Armand’s Circle and meet with Roland Moser and Kristin DeFrancisco at McCarver & Moser Jewelers. There we explore Patek Phillippe timepieces as functional works of art. Exquisite timepieces they are. As exceptional creations they outlive passing fashions; exquisite and elegant.

Departing the Circle we put Wood Street Studio in our sights where a stopover with master woodworker Dale Rieke is in order. Half wood shop, half studio we spend time taking in fascinating examples of woodworking. Dale’s work spans architectural, furniture and art. Each piece is unique and intricate in its own way; visually stimulating.

Last we jet off to Parma, Italy to meet with Luca Mamiani. Luca, an Italian fashion designer, is the founder of Personal Identity. His firm creates personal graphic identities and derives bespoke fashion items from the logo or crest. Each item is as unique as the individual’s personal identity. Truly one of a kind and never replicated.

Handcrafted or Handmade? It’s up to you.
