Once in a while, a great gem becomes available on the market in Sarasota. A gem that makes you scratch your head asking, “Why would anyone ever want to leave this place?”

162 Osprey Point Drive [1] is just that; a breathtaking gem. The exterior is soft, minimalistic with Mediterranean detail. The exterior entry stairway brings you to an entryway framed by a set of massive bronze and glass doors, 17’ tall. You stand for a moment, breath taken by the magnificent detail and forget to ring the doorbell to let the homeowner know you have arrived. After basking in their brilliance the homeowner notices your gaze and comes to open the doors, beaming with excitement and the background story to this functional piece of art.

The entryway doors, handmade in Ecuador, are more of a sculpture, ones that traveled by way of Panama Canal for installation in this majestic home. The sheer mass of them is about 2,000 pounds, yet they gracefully open with a gentle push. The beauty of them is like nothing I have encountered in current construction.

As the doors open, the exquisite, rich and lush interior is revealed starting with the continuous use of highly desired 18”x18” Calcutta marble floors. Stepping into the foyer with its 24’ arched ceilings, I notice the floating circular staircase, also crafted of Calcutta off to my left. My eyes then dart to the formal living immediately before me and out to the infinity edge pool overlooking the Mangrove Preserve and Sarasota Bay. Off to the right was the dining room where something made me look twice. It was the very subtle use of art-deco details. Not brash Miami Beach, rather subtle architectural details in hand made plaster columns that gave the space character.

As a kitchen designer, I am always most anxious to view the kitchen. This was a kitchen full of details that exceeds ones imagination. The Neff cabinetry made of exotic woods was stunning. The craftsmanship and detail in the door style was more beautiful than one could anticipate. It is graceful, tasteful, perfectly executed and full of surprises. I found fun turns and unexpected twists such as the handmade wet bar area with lighted onyx panels and tops. A walk-in wine cellar filled with history from every corner of the world. Versatility? Yes.

Turning to the outside lanai I took in the most handsome infinity pool with a soft water-scape cascading down toward the mangroves. There is a small waterfall to the far side of the pool that transforms into a small pond-like area. Glass railings let Nature’s beauty create a picturesque backdrop. I had fallen in love.

Going upstairs I find more Calcutta and a magical master suite with arched ceilings with backlit coves overlooking the property’s amazing backyard. In the master bathroom, I immediately noticed the phenomenal Ann Sachs tile, genius patterns, selections and design innovations that make this bathroom timeless and amazing. All supported by the continuing tasteful art deco theme, artesian craftsmanship at its finest. Again, already in love, I fall deeper upon seeing the spacious master closets with their organization and everything at your fingertips.

Passing the home theater I transcended the open stairway to the third level where the view of the protected waterway throws me deeper into my intense appreciation of the home itself. The view was paradise. Secluded waterways blanketed by lush panoramic views of protected mangroves; a view so magnificent that, its beauty is fully disclosed only from the higher levels; a view that would invite its owner to the third floor even after a decade of living there to sit gazing through the flames in the fire pit into eternal beauty.

This is what this home embodies; something so majestic, intimate and exciting. While the home’s features are extremely intimate, they are ones a future homeowner would quickly embrace and allow to become their own.

The contractor who built this home is Baron Construction & Development owned by Nelson Ohman. A renowned builder I had the pleasure of working for previously on another project. Knowing his work I can say that this home single handedly is the most precisely throughout, intricate construction I have seen. The details master planned in this home are so triumphant that they will only become meaningful when closely observed by another. Nothing is blatant or in-your-face. The important facets are casual and reserved, very understated. They are the sort of characteristics that I consider make a viewer want to explore the meaning…not details that make you ask, “Why?”

So, I ask myself again, “Why would any homeowner want to leave this masterpiece of a creation? Why is this even up for sale?” The answer is simple: to create another.

No words can describe how captivating this home truly is. This is a home you must see for yourself. A home of caliber and substance; a home any buyer would be proud to own, especially after learning its history.
