“From Form Follows Function Until Form And Function Are One”

The Nautilus has been revered and studied by mathematicians, biologists, and philosophers for ages. It has endured for millions of years, an exquisite specimen that exemplifies the relationship between form and function. “The shell,” says Ryan Perrone, “represents everything that can be accomplished in the building process: beautiful design, solid construction, and innovative use of space.”

Ryan, who grew up working in his family’s construction business, launched Nautilus Homes to fulfill a very personal vision. “Perrone Construction is known as luxury builder that produces high-quality, traditional style residences,” Ryan observes. “Nautilus Homes maintains a focus on exceptional construction, but with an emphasis on what we call ‘jewel box houses,’ structures that maximize space while exploring innovative design.” He adds, “We provide high quality, unique character homes and maintain the outstanding level of customer care that Perrone Constructions’ customers have enjoyed since 1980.”

Nepotism wasn’t a factor; he recalls overhearing a conversation in which his father instructed a site supervisor to keep Ryan, then 17 years old, off of a particular project. “During lunch, I went ahead and did the work,” he recalls. “When my father returned to the site the next day, he was impressed with the craftsmanship and asked who had done the work.” Ryan’s skills were rewarded; he was promoted to a position as a carpenters assistant where he continued to study the art of building homes, and to prove his mettle.

At 20 years old, engaged on a project for a high-profile client, Ryan worked his way into a leadership position when the site superintendent left for vacation. “I asked for the opportunity to manage the project while the super was on vacation,” he says. Father, Richard Perrone, granted Ryan his request, and he reassumed the role he felt equipped to handle. Witnessing Ryan’s dexterity his father ultimately allowed him to complete the home. “It was an impressive project that made the cover of the 20th anniversary edition of Veranda Magazine,” Ryan says. “That was a turning point for me. That’s when I decided to be a General Contractor.”

His attention to detail, unwavering work ethic and passion for efficiency have shaped the course of Ryan’s career and defined Nautilus Homes’ promise to its customers. “We’ve shown, time and again, that you don’t have to settle for a track home that lacks character and individuality,” Ryan asserts.
The home building process, he says, can also be a positive one with the right team. “Our concierge approach helps relieve the stressors involved in building a home,” Ryan observes. “It’s not always an easy process. We employ open and ongoing communication to minimize frustration and inconveniences, and our systems and processes keep us on track, on time and on budget.”

Building a custom home, says Ryan, “Involves owner driven changes during the process. It’s not uncommon for clients to request modifications to materials or designs.” These changes, he says, are handled adeptly and efficiently. “They don’t affect our ability to perform. We’re able to adapt accordingly with minimal impact to the project.”

In addition to delivering dramatic views the DJI S800 remote control drone enables clients to see their “views” before construction starts and provides video updates for remote clients.

Engaging those customers in the process is critical. “We establish expectations, providing our clients with the information they need to keep the project running smoothly,” Ryan explains. “A comprehensive list of items requiring selections, with deadline dates, lets people know exactly when they’ll need to make decisions on details such as countertop materials, flooring and interior colors. This maintains the flow of the construction process and is one system among many we use that allows us to deliver the top-quality product and experience that defines us.”

Construction runs deep in Ryan’s family. Pictured here with father, Rich, and brother, Ricky, of Perrone Construction.

Client Russell James shares, “We are very pleased with our new home. There are thousands of components that all fit together to make a home. One of the things that separates Nautilus from the pack is that they pay attention to all of these parts. It took the lumber supplier three deliveries of 2×4 wall studs before there were enough straight ones acceptable to Nautilus. Schedule was very important to us. We did not wish to drag this process out over 18 months which would have been easy to do. Our home, start to finish, was one year. This included lot selection and purchase, architectural design, drawing, and actual construction time of 9 months. To make this happen the builder needs to be working every day, keep their subs focused and communicate with the owners, suppliers, and subs. Nautilus finished on time.”

To deliver quality means a hands on approach no matter how large or small the project.

The Perrone family’s 34+ years in construction business have allowed them to cultivate solid industry relationships with key players in every aspect of the building process. “Our strategic partnerships make a difference,” Ryan says. “From plumbing fixtures and appliances, to subcontractors and service professionals, we have invested a great deal of time and effort into finding what we consider to be the best of the best. We’ve worked hard to put together skilled craftsman and suppliers that share our passion.”

Recharging internal batteries keeps the creative process fresh and attention to detail sharp, whether it is the rumble of the small block or the peacefulness of the intra-coastal waterway.

Nautilus Homes’ extended team of professionals also includes real estate agents, architects, surveyors and closing attorneys. “It’s not uncommon for us to work with clients even before they’ve purchased land,” reveals Ryan. “Our clients appreciate the opportunity to enjoy a streamlined process with a team that works cohesively and efficiently.”

While Ryan’s professional focus remains on the success of Nautilus Homes and the company’s growing clientele, he makes time to take advantage of the enviable Sarasota lifestyle. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys surfing, snowboarding and wakeboarding. He may be found paddle boarding with his beloved Husky, or burning rubber on track day at local motorsports venues. He’s also an aerial photography buff who has invested in high-quality video, camera and drone equipment. “It’s a hobby, but it’s also great for our out-of-town clients, who love seeing video and photo progress of their home construction,” says Ryan. The Perrone family makes annual visits to Europe and travels to many locations around the world where they reconnect with history and glean design inspiration for future projects.

Ryan’s attention to detail is evident, whether inside or out. The details truly make a home yours.

Nautilus Home’s design blurs the lines between indoors and out to create space that expands beyond the walls to form outdoor places. Then the space between becomes as important as the buildings.

An award-winning home builder (Winner of SRQ Magazine’s 2013 Home of the Year for The Bonaire at Spice Bay) with a solid foundation of success, Ryan continues to set the standard by which others are measured. Nautilus Homes are solid, substantial and stunning. Ryan Perrone and Nautilus Homes are raising the bar on residential building throughout the Gulf Coast region.
