2014 Sarasota SUP Series

2013 saw the introduction of Sarasota’s SUP (Stand Up Paddleboarding) Series, three events, each a unique race experience. The only SUP Race Series of its kind, the series is designed to showcase three of Sarasota County’s most beautiful Parks; Siesta Key Beach, Lake Benderson Park and Sarasota Sailor Squadron. Spearheaded by SUP Sarasota’s founder Rob Alfieri, beyond competition the series promotes the healthy lifestyle embodied by Stand Up Paddleboarding.
Why did you start the SUP Series?
I fell in love with the experience of being out on the water on a Stand Up Paddleboard here in Sarasota and wanted to share it with as many people as possible. I knew a Race would be a great way to get a large group of like-minded people together to have some fun, but couldn’t decide on a single location to hold it…So I chose 3. All unique sites, each a unique race experience!!
What types of races are involved in an event?
We have designed several events, all fun, geared towards either newbe or experienced paddlers. We have a 6 Mile Elite Race for the serious competitive types. A 3 Mile Open Race for those new to the sport or who want a less intense and demanding race environment. Coed Sprint Relay Races which are open to any level and are a total blast to race in or just watch from the shore. A half mile Grom Race for those younger racers 12 and under and finally the Corporate Challenge in the afternoon which is like a Tough Mudder but with Kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards and Beach Exercises.
Who can participate?
The events are free to the Public to attend. There will be tons of stand up paddleboard and surf vendors, food and beer samplings, raffles, board and equipment demos, kids paddle and adult paddle. For a small registration fee you can compete in the series. No experience is necessary; we will have boards and paddles that competitors can rent for the races! What is your ultimate goal with the SUP Series?
Two immediate goals: To highlight the natural beauty of Sarasota Counties Waterfront Parks and to promote the healthy, family oriented lifestyle of Stand Up Paddleboarding. Our long term goal is to make the Sarasota SUP Race Series the largest Stand UP Paddleboard Race on the East Coast of the United States with each event being held over multiple days.
