November 15, 2014 New Music At New College

New Music New College Season Continues.

The innovative New Music New College concert series continues with a performance by The New College Chorus entitled “Darkness and Light.”

The concert is at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, with a pre-concert talk at 7:30 p.m., in the College’s Mildred Sainer Pavilion. Tickets are $15, $5 for students and free for the New College community.

New Music New College features original interpretations of classic pieces, and this concert, the second in the 2014-15 season, is no exception.

The New College Chorus was founded in 2005 by the late Daniel Moe, who is often called the dean of American choral conductors. Now directed by Virginia Bray, the chorus sings classics of the vast choral repertoire, from Gregorian chant to music of today’s composers.

For this special program, the Chorus will perform “Dark Night of the Soul,” a major work by the Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo. Composed for voices and a small instrumental ensemble, the music is rhythmically charged and texturally dynamic. At times the instruments accompany the choir, but the relationship can shift, with the voices providing a wordless harmonic backdrop for instrumental virtuosity. Also on the program: Meredith Monk’s dazzling “Return to Earth,” Morten Lauridsen’s “Sure On This Shining Night” and R. Murray Schafer’s “Epitaph for Moonlight,” with piano and string quartet.

There also will be a free “artist conversation” from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Sainer Pavilion.

The Mildred Sainer Music and Arts Pavilion is in the College’s Caples Fine Arts Complex, 5313 Bay Shore Road, just south of the Ringling Museum.  Reservations are available online at donate.ncf.edu/events, or by calling 941-487-4888.
