July 10-August 5, 2015 Defining Abstraction

Selby Gallery I & II Presents…

Ever wondered: What is Abstraction? View a wide range of responses to this question and enjoy discussing them with the artists at the opening of Defining Abstraction, a group exhibition featuring work by over 30 contemporary artists; including Peter Brown, Jean Blackburn, John Clement, Elisabeth Condon, Hugh Davies, Kyler Duhé, Peppi Elona, Gay Germain, John Henry, Mike Hodges, Julie Kanapaux, Jay Kelly, Ellen Mason, Nicole Mauser, Laine Nixon, Anna Paul, Gary Petersen, Elisabeth Phillipson, Meg Pierce, Judy Lyons Schneider, Ali Smith, Tremain Smith, Mike Solomon, Tom Stephens, Steven Strenk, Pamela Sumner, Kyle Trowbridge, Josette Urso, Siebren Versteeg, Jeff Whipple and Michael Wyshock.

Curator of Galleries and Exhibitions for Ringling College of Art and Design, Mark Ormond, assembled the exhibition while considering the same question, and these are his comments: “What is Abstraction? Perhaps we all think we know what it is, we know we can define it or we know it when we see it. This exhibition is designed to pose as many questions as it answers. It will provide the viewer examples of works of art where the artists have pondered or wrestled with the idea of abstraction.”

Ormond intentionally selected artists who work in a variety of media such as painting, sculpture and printmaking. As he notes: “Since abstract art first made its appearance in the twentieth century, artists have continued to paint pure abstract compositions. However, in the last, at least, twenty years, artists have employed the computer and digital images as part of their process of discovery and execution. The role of the pixel in the making and recording of images is now as ubiquitous as the palette, tube of paint and brush. The works in this exhibition will demonstrate this.”
