November 18, 2015 Jazz Meets Art

Jazz Club Of Sarasota Presents Billy Marcus And Synia Carroll.

Performing and visual arts join forces on Wednesday, November 18, when the Jazz Club of Sarasota and Art Center Sarasota present the latest concert in their series titled “Jazz Meets Art.” The event, which runs from 5 to 7 p.m., will be held at Art Center Sarasota, 707 N. Tamiami Trail, where pianist Billy Marcus and vocalist Synia Carroll will provide jazz favorites in a gallery setting.

Jazz Meets Art includes a gallery exhibit from 5 to 7 p.m. and music by the featured performers from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Light snacks and a cash bar are provided. Admission is $10 for Jazz Club members and $15 for nonmembers.

Jazz pianist Billy Marcus began his professional career in 1968 in the Boston-Cape Cod area of Massachusetts, working with Bobby Hackett among others. In 1974 he moved to Miami where he formed his own quartets and quintets and played for radio and television broadcasts as well as major festivals. In his hotel and club gigs he played with some of the biggest names in jazz including Stan Getz, Dizzy Gillespie, the Bill Evans Trio, the Horace Silver Quintet, McCoy Tyner, Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band, Maynard Ferguson, Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins.

Synia Carroll draws her inspiration from the jazz legends of the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. Hints of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan can be heard whether she’s singing a sultry ballad, raucous, finger-snapping dance tune or up-tempo Bebop number. Synia brings the same clear, smooth tones and respect to these classic jazz standards.
