Bride Hair Trial

By Sheila Venancia

On your wedding day, it is your day to shine and you want to look and feel more beautiful than you ever have in your life. Here are a few pointers to make sure you have a successful hair trial and that you walk away from your trial appointment with the confidence that your wedding day will run smoothly and that you will be the beautiful bride you have always dreamed.

When you’re meeting with your wedding hair stylist for the first time, keep in mind that since he or she doesn’t know your personal tastes, you’ll need to show as well as tell. The best way is to gather photos from magazines that feature hairstyles you like and search wedding hairstyles online. Maybe you absolutely have to have fullness to your hair or maybe you know that no matter what, you don’t want to wear your hair in a bun. Whatever it is, have those absolutes ready for your stylist.

Photos are a great way to illustrate your personal style and your likes and dislikes. But, I like to tell brides that you should think of photos as inspiration, not instruction. Everyone’s hair is different and every style is going to be different on everyone. So, if you do bring photos, it is best to use them to show your stylist different features of particular hairstyles that you like, not necessarily as an exact blueprint for what you want, that may not be realistic.

While bringing pictures is a given, do not feel as though you need to narrow it down to just one or two options. A lot of the pictures you’ll find will only show the hair from one angle. If you love the front of one look but the back of another, your stylist can work to incorporate elements of your favorite ideas.

Be open to changing your hair. If you’re in love with a particular style, ask your stylist if she’d recommend changing anything about your current cut and color to make it look its best. You may find that your style would look better with side-swept bangs or that you should cut layers into your long locks to add dimension. Or, she may suggest something subtle, like parting your hair on the opposite side or overextending the part.

Also, you should consider bringing any hairpieces or accessories you think you may like as part of your bridal look. If possible, you might also consider bringing your veil. Bring it all……it is play time….have fun with your hair stylist.

Speaking of photos, you should also be sure to bring a camera or cell phone. Ask your stylist to photograph each finished look from four different angles, front, back, and both sides. That way, you’ll be able to see how you look from all views, and you’ll get an idea of how the style translates to photographs. Since a wedding consultation can take place months before your actual event, take pictures so you can remember what style works best for you.

ABSOLUTELY….do not hold back your concerns because you are afraid of hurting your stylist’s feelings! This is your wedding day and your happiness is just too important. They know that if you want something changed it doesn’t mean that it wasn’t “good” it just means that it wasn’t “good for you”; it just wasn’t your style. So speak up!!!!

In summary, the most important thing for a bride to do for a successful hair trial is……..communicate, communicate, and communicate.
