Kim’s Campari

By Kimberly Burns, OTR/L, CLT

“The classic Italian aperitivo drinks differ by region but usually include a mix with Aperol or Campari liquors.”

An aperitif or aperitivo is roughly translated as “to open”. Diners are prepared for dinner delights and transition from the stress of the day to the well-deserved meal. What a great Happy Hour!

As a part of my very long journey of transitioning my daily habits and discovering food intolerances, I have begun to appreciate the benefits that alcohol can give when directed correctly.

Since that night of our fine restaurant review, aperitif has been an addition to my food style with my many digestive problems and a substitution for drinking too much wine. When making changes to your lifestyle, trying to restrict drinking alcohol can be very difficult in social situations. Let’s face it, it’s a great weakness for a lot of us. Reframing your food style to include alcohols that may aide in digestion, as well as, drinking in moderation can be of great benefit to heal your gut and sooth your mind.

kim burns campari [1]Recommended by Terrill, Bartender Extraodinaire of Taverna Grill on Hillview, the Campari, a mix of infused herbs and fruit in alcohol water, provides the bitter needed for triggering enzymes and igniting the digestive system.

The original recipe contained: Campari, Tito’s vodka, Taverna Grill’s Original Syrup, and garnished with lime and orange wedges. While it might not be the original recipe, my version is just as delicious!

RECIPE Directions:

Fill a tall glass with ice
Fill with 40% Campari
Add orange zest and squeeze a slice of orange
Add maraschino cherries and some juice
Add grenadine, if needed, for sweetness
Top with sparkling water or coconut La Croix

Enjoy the recipe!
