Not Just A House – It’s Now A Home

As a professional kitchen and bath designer [1] for nearly thirty years I pride myself on seeing good bones of a house in its before stage. This is exactly what I saw in the Peregrine Point Drive house; which we proudly call home. The Landings neighborhood reminded us of Westlake Village and Brentwood, both suburbs of Los Angeles where we are from.

The decision to move to Sarasota was an easy one, beautiful accessible beaches, clear clean air, no clogged freeways AND homes that are; shall we say – offer much more value than in southern California. We loved The Landings vibe with its great flora and fauna, its uncrowded wide open areas, the individuality of custom homes, its laid back style and a great family neighborhood where people actually wave and say “hi”. It’s also a guard-gated community which we were accustomed to.

That being said, most homes were stuck in the 80’s and only a couple have been torn down or are being torn down and rebuilt from the ground up. To me that screams new life, new people, new community, in a great in-town neighborhood. Let’s face it, we’ve always heard location, location, location. The older neighborhoods in most cities have great locations but were built eons ago when the property was considered close-in. Such is true of The Landings. Folks that purchased the homes in the 80’s are now down-sizing as their children are grown and moved out which then enters new families and new remodels within this same great neighborhood.

When I first saw the house I thought great California style wide ranch with great street potential and presence. Once I walked into it, I looked through the brightly colored red, blue, green, and yellow walls with sponge paint and awful wallpaper everywhere. What I also saw was the potential to utilize its soaring ceilings, its great room sizes and its potential to be a mostly single level home. I’ve designed many ADA (American Disability Act) compliant bathrooms – but never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I’d be designing one for myself.

After we flew to Sarasota in September of 2013 to purchase the house I came to find out that my excruciating aching back was due to a spinal cord tumor and it was not just a pulled muscle. Fast forward to year end of 2013 when I had a successful surgery in L.A. and had to postpone our move to Sarasota by a year so I could adequately recover. So what does a kitchen and bath designer do during her recovery? She designs her own home with meticulous details and thorough plan to be able to easily walk from one end of the home to the other with no steps and shower with a wide easy access. That’s just what I did. I spent most of my time thoroughly engulfed in the design. I knew that I wanted to be able to walk from the garage through to the bedrooms easily; that meant removing a half wall and 2 steps between the living and dining room so I could navigate to the master bedroom. That meant borrowing a few feet from an adjacent bedroom to increase the space in the master bath to allow me a full access spa-like shower which no one would ever guess was for easy access. Even though there are steps into the family room, the width of the openings would allow for an easy ramp if necessary.

I had so much fun doing the design work seeing it to fruition was exciting. Of course like in any or most remodels there are hiccups, and we encountered them as well. Remodeling isn’t a fun process even for those of us who are professionals. What I was able to do was to accomplish the open, airy look I wanted by knocking down a front wall to see through to the lanai and new pool with the lush Florida landscape that I created for minimum maintenance. I ditched those bright Smurf colored walls for an even-tone neutral look which showed off the large crown moldings and gorgeous custom cabinetry. I chose to use local sources for most of my purchases. The appliances are from Mullet’s for the Sub-Zero and Wolf, the new 3-zone air conditioners are from Wentzel’s, the pool was remodeled by Progressive Pools. I sourced locally and American made whenever I was able. The interior paint is a Benjamin Moore low VOC product also purchased local. The landscape and irrigation crew came recommended to me by a local Bradenton nursery. The cage company also local taught me a thing or three since we came from California where we don’t have pool cages. All things were new to me. We upgraded to the stainless steel screw package so they would not rust in the Florida climate. Many and much thought was given to the finishes and challenges of our new home. When all was said and done, I am pleased with what I accomplished and know that my vision on paper became my reality which I looked forward to while recovering.
