July 1, 2019 Florida Ban On Texting While Driving Takes Effect

Is Texting While Driving A Big Deal?

Yes! It’s responsible for more teen deaths than drunk-driving. And distracted driving kills nine people of all ages every day in America.

The bill that makes texting while driving a primary offense goes into effect today. But, what does that actually mean for Florida motorists.

1. The bill doesn’t ban the use of cell phone while a car is stationary.
2. The bill requires officers to record the race and ethnicity of people who are cited.
3. Motorists don’t have to give their phones to officers without a warrant.
4. You can still legally use your cell phone for navigation purposes.
5. Work zones and school zones are hands-free areas.
6. The legislation does not apply to self-driving cars.

So, do we have to stop texting while driving immediately? Well, we all should. But legally, the state is giving us a grace period. Mounting an educational campaign police will issue warnings through the end of the year with actual starting Jan. 1, 2020.
