For stylist Kim F. Frazier, the art of beauty is more than a profession; it’s a passion. Three decades after launching her career in Sarasota, the New York native continues to love what she does. From makeovers and hairstyles, to special event and fashion work, Kim enjoys the opportunity to make a positive impact on the looks -and lives- of her clientele.
Even as a young girl, Kim had a knack for aesthetics. “The first haircut I gave was my sister’s Barbie doll,” she recalls. “Unfortunately, it was the one she was saving as a collector’s item!” Though her early efforts may not have been great successes, there was no holding Kim back from pursuing her love of styling. After graduating from high school she attended Manatee Junior College, but soon realized that her heart wasn’t in her endeavors. “My friends and family encouraged me to pursue my dreams,” she recalls. So Kim enrolled in Universal Cosmetology School (now Fashion Focus Academy) and began her career as a stylist in earnest.
While in school, Kim displayed a natural talent and a knack for leadership. In addition to assisting her fellow students during classes, she was also hand-picked to perform a makeover on a local newspaper reporter for a feature piece. She moved on to style hair and makeup for models in fashion shows and other high-profile events including the Sarasota French Film Festival, and worked with talent at the Golden Apple Dinner Theatre, the Asolo Repertory Theatre, and the Sarasota Opera House. Other projects have included local commercials, magazine and print work.
Her tenure in the business hasn’t kept Kim from maintaining a fresh approach to her work. “It’s exciting to create new looks,” she enthuses. “I’m always learning new techniques, developing styles, and working with new products.” From magazines to hair shows, she stays current on what’s hot – and what’s good style – and incorporates these elements into her clients’ styles. Though she listens to their wants and needs, Kim isn’t shy about offering her opinions on what will work. “I come from a family of eight,” she laughs. “I have no problem giving people my opinions!” Her clients couldn’t be happier; Kim’s regulars range from children to teens, men and women, and she counts herself fortunate to have a loyal group of customers who have been with her since she joined her first salon.
Those who know Kim are privy to her gentle side; she displays a customer-made piece of art that reads, “Believe” at her salon station. “I have faith that when you do good, it comes back to you,” she reveals. She’s actively involved in giving back to the community, regularly donating free haircuts and foils to local churches and charity auctions.
From commercial projects to new and regular clientele, to special events including weddings, debutante balls and proms, Kim is always up for a new challenge. “My fingers start to itch when I’m not cutting hair,” she laughs. “I love what I do!”
