June 5, 2010 – Friends of Oscar Scherer Park Host Grand Opening
Oscar Scherer Park To Open ADA-Compliant Lake Osprey Trail.
The Friends of Oscar Scherer Park invite the public to celebrate the opening of the ADA-compliant Lake Osprey Trail at Oscar Scherer State Park. Oscar Scherer Park is located at 1843 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey. The ribbon-cutting celebration is set for Saturday, June 5, from 12:30pm-2pm, in conjunction with National Trails Day.
The Friends created the new trail by combining a $50,000 donation from Lee Wetherington Homes with the volunteer services of their 350-member group and 11 members of AmeriCorps, along with an engineering study by the Florida Park Service over an old footpath. Participants in the ribbon-cutting will be Lee Wetherington, founder/president of Lee Wetherington Homes; John Roche, Park Manager; Valinda Subic, Chief, Bureau of Parks District 4; Jon Thaxton, Sarasota County Commissioner; and Russell Delaney, president of The Friends of Oscar Scherer Park . Joining them will be Victor Rocco and JC Chase, students at Oak Park School.
Visitors can enjoy free admission to the Park, free hot dogs (while they last), music by Turn Back Time and a relaxing walk along the shore of Lake Osprey. This accessible trail with benches accommodates those of all abilities: people in wheelchairs, families with strollers and guests of all ages.
