Perfecting The Shell

“From Form Follows Function Until Form And Function Are One”

The Nautilus has been revered and studied by mathematicians, biologists, and philosophers for ages. It has endured for millions of years, an exquisite specimen that exemplifies the relationship between form and function. “The shell,” says Ryan Perrone, “represents everything that can be accomplished in the building process: beautiful design, solid construction, and innovative use of space.”

Ryan, who grew up working in his family’s construction business, launched Nautilus Homes to fulfill a very personal vision. “Perrone Construction is known as luxury builder that produces high-quality, traditional style residences,” Ryan observes. “Nautilus Homes maintains a focus on exceptional construction, but with an emphasis on what we call ‘jewel box houses,’ structures that maximize space while exploring innovative design.” He adds, “We provide high quality, unique character homes and maintain the outstanding level of customer care that Perrone Constructions’ customers have enjoyed since 1980.” Read More

411 North Casey Key Road

Lavish Gulf-Front Seclusion

By Ed Bertha

Situated on Sarasota’s narrow plot of sand known as Casey Key, 411 North Casey Key Road sets a standard for luxury on the Gulf Coast, and is in tune with Atlantic Coast resorts like Palm Beach, Jupiter Island and Miami when it comes to luxe real estate.

Spanning over 300 feet of pristine Gulf of Mexico shoreline, this very private estate includes two separate custom residences and occupies nearly one and half lushly landscaped gulf-front acres on Casey Key’s highly-coveted north end.

The main residence in this remarkable, walled-in compound offers dazzling, unobstructed views of the Gulf of Mexico. Stepping outside one finds a seaside sculpture garden and a sumptuous pool with cascading rock waterfall and fountain. The newly resurfaced tennis court, lighted for nighttime play, is situated between the two gulf-front homes. Read More

Letter From The Publisher Ed Bertha – The Jewel Rising

The Jewel Rising

By Ed Bertha

On April 14, 2014 the corner of Main Street and Gulf Stream Avenue witnessed the beginning of a rebirth. On that day ground breaking for Tom Mannausa’s $50 million luxury mixed use high rise, The Jewel, unassumingly took place. Many doubted. Many didn’t believe. I heard some of them. All the while Tom Mannausa diligently kept playing chess, moving through the myriad of hurdles and permits. Getting to know him, I never doubted his ability to bring his vision to reality. The Jewel is funded with cash to maintain a debt free project through construction of its skeleton and completion of the exterior. That’s a huge war chest. Read More

The Jewel Rising

By Ed Bertha

Tom, you opened The Jewel’s sales office in November, 2012. In December, 2013 you began converting deposits into binding purchase agreements. During the same timeframe you had to deal with permits and other legal hurdles. Construction began in April, 2014. The Jewel’s residents are slated to move in early August, 2015. What a ride, and the most satisfying part is only beginning. Let’s reflect. Read More

Real cares – Center For Building Hope

Center for Building Hope:

A Thriving Community of Individuals Affected By Cancer

By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa

Every person impacted by cancer has a unique story, but invariably, the collective tales follows a similar plot line. “It’s like being thrown into a foreign country where you don’t speak the language,” observes Program Director Andrea Feldmar, LMHC. “The first thing many people feel, aside from panic, is alone.” Processing volumes of information related to everything from blood count, drugs, interactions and reactions, says Andrea, is akin to trying to learn something new while hopping on one foot, blindfolded. “It’s pretty challenging and isolating,” she notes. “That’s what Center for Building Hope addresses. We reduce that overwhelming sense of isolation.” Read More

Thinking Of Remodeling Your Condo?

By Jay Anderson

It is the time of year when our Florida weather spawns spring cleaning and remodeling projects. Large condominium projects typically occur when a resale purchase is made, while smaller projects, like a kitchen or bath, can occur any time. In a single-family home you are usually inconveniencing one person or a single family, but in a condo, you could be impacting hundreds. Sometimes, though, structural elements or utilities prevent a contractor from being able to redesign the interior as much as you would like. If you live in a condo here are a few items to consider from my years of performing condo renovations. Read More

The Residential Real Estate Business Is …

By Patricia Tan

Some would say it is just that – a business, a commercial enterprise. Others might say it is a transaction business – after all, as Realtors® we get paid only upon successful closing of a transaction, and this is how we measure our personal and business productivity. But what is it really?

The real estate business serves one of a human being’s most basic needs – the need for shelter. As such, it is important that we realize our business is essentially a people business. As Realtors®, our business success is dependent upon how well we serve our customers before, during and after a transaction. Read More

Designer Liability From A Forensic Architects Point of View?

By William Henry, PhD

“Your Architect Cannot Deliver Perfection”

As a forensic architect and court certified expert witness, I am often engaged by both plaintiff and defense counsel to opine on whether an architect has committed errors and omissions that would lead to liability exposure. What actions by architects constitute errors and omissions (E&O) that could lead to damages incurred by property owners, clients, and/or victims of construction site injuries?

A Take On Errors And Omissions

Prior to attempting to offer up yet another definition of E&O, we need to establish that according to most industry wide standards, a professional architect need not be perfect in rendering his service. Particularly with respect to the delivery of complex building projects, E&O will occur. The best gauge of whether liability can be assigned is whether the design professional used “reasonable care and good professional judgment in the rendering of the service”. Read More

The Dragon

September 15, 1978 saw China Smith, Jr. enter this world. Born and raised in Sarasota, China grew up boxing with his father, China Smith, Sr., and playing football. “My dad had me going around running and doing (boxing) drills when I was 3,” he recalls.

Although China’s father, who boxed for fun, pushed for him to focus on boxing, China had other thoughts. As a freshman he made the varsity football team at Riverview High School and quickly became one of the top running backs in the nation, amassing 25 touchdowns & over 1,300 yards rushing. As a senior China surprised everyone by turning down scholarships from the University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Miami, Michigan, and Notre Dame in hopes of becoming a professional boxer. A Homage To Classical Architecture

By Ed Bertha

At the highest point in Essex County sits the magnificent 3.8 acre gated, 24,000 sq ft, private elegant chateau, offering panoramic vistas of New York City. This extraordinary estate personifies a timeless grandeur, bringing together profound luxury and intimate craftsmanship. The result is a warm, inviting sense of home.

Tucked in the heart of a cul-de-sac, entry to the chateau is protected by massive wrought-iron gates. The limestone residence embodies a strong sense of Greco-Roman influences. The use of Corinthian columns, a massive fountain, sculptures, Greek keys above the scalloped arched mullion glass windows and a multitude of architectural elements prove this to be a legendary home. Bonneted style dormers just further the idea of the creative genius that went into every detail. The carved mahogany front doors have custom copper/bronze fixtures and beckon opening. Very secluded and secure, boasting eight bedrooms, nine full bathrooms and four half bathrooms, the estate can safely accommodate royalty. Read More
