New College of Florida Hosts Dr. Fiona Crawford.

Military veterans wounded by roadside bombs commonly suffer from traumatic brain injury. Recently, studies have shown that professional football players also experience traumatic brain injury, from less severe but repeated impacts to the head.

Dr. Fiona Crawford, president of the Roskamp Institute, will speak on “Traumatic Brain Injury Research,” the next event in the New Topics New College discussion series, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014 in the Mildred Sainer Pavilion at New College of Florida. She will present the latest research on links between traumatic brain injury and the development of neurodegenerative diseases, and information on potential treatments under development.

Traumatic brain injury, Crawford explains, consists of the initial primary injury, caused by an impact to the head, and a delayed secondary injury that develops hours and days later. At the Roskamp Institute, Dr. Crawford leads a team of seven researchers using laboratory models of repetitive, mild traumatic brain injury to target the pathways of the secondary injury response. Their hope is to develop treatments to reduce the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury, which affects some 1.4 million Americans each year.
