Area Powerboat Teams Participating In Qatar Cup.
Three area powerboat race teams (out of 11 race teams from the US) will travel to Doha, Qatar to compete in the 2nd Annual Qatar Cup February 4-7, 2015. Local racers participating in the Qatar Cup include Billy Glueck (Twisted Metal Race Team), Dan Lawrence (The Hulk Race Team), and Ryan Beckley (Peters & May Racing Logistics). This race site will include 45 boats and 30 jet skis from around the world and three full days of racing including a Jet Ski Marathon. The Qatar Cup will be held on the Doha Corniche, a prime and appropriate location for such a race with the Doha business district acting as a backdrop for the race site. Thousands of spectators are expected to attend with plenty of scheduled activities, unique to the area, scheduled for teams and spectators alike.
US Team Coordinator for the Qatar Cup, Lucy Nicandri, indicated that in addition to the teams from the United States international teams from Kuwait, Turkey, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates have transported their boats over to Doha in order to compete. Several of these teams are also planning to transport their race boats back over the United States, to order to participate in the 31st Annual Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival over the 4th of July. “It was an honor to be asked by the Qatar Motor Sports Federation and Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix to serve in such an important role securing commitments and plans from US race teams for the Qatar Cup. I see this as a partnership that will continue to grow and build international participation for the sport.” During this week long event, Sarasota will be heavily promoted to international race teams and spectators from around the world as a premier powerboat race site. There will be a special preview video shown on the Grand Prix Festival during the Awards Gala scheduled to be held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Doha.
This year’s Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival, sanctioned by Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix, will offer nine days of festivities with two full days of racing off Lido Beach (July 4 & 5) to air at a later date during prime time on CBS Sports Network. It will also include the P1 Powerboat Race Series (which includes super stock race boats and jet skis). Last year the Grand Prix Festival had an economic impact of $26 million dollars and generated 15,900 room nights.
