The History of Balayage

By Sheila Venancia

This method of coloring emerged in Paris in the 1970’s; the name is French for “to sweep,” a reference to the way in which the color is applied. After it was exported to the United States, Balayage became extremely popular in the late 1990s. In the United States, the word is sometimes spelled “Balliage.”

In the 70’s, this technique was originally called “Balayage a Coton” for it’s use of cotton strips to separate the colored hair from the untouched portion. It was introduced during the time when the industry norm was frosting caps and solid colors, making the Balayage technique truly revolutionary for its time! In the 80’s the industry introduced many varieties of foil highlighting techniques and it wasn’t actually until the early 90’s that Balayage first entered the US by storm grabbing the attention of top celebrities and became one of the hottest color trends to date! When Sarah Jessica Parker began rocking the sun-kissed, dimensional color pattern in the last days of Sex & The City, every fashionista in the nation was on board.

IT IS A TECHINIQUE
When hair is colored with the Balayage process, the highlights are painted on by hand in a sweeping motion that moves from the base to the tip of the hair. At the base, the color is applied very lightly, while at the tip, the color is very heavy. The result is a chunky highlight that looks naturally sun bleached, and as the hair grows out, the root will be concealed for the first few months by the thinner color applied to the base of the hair. 5 Things Foreigners* Ask About Spending Time in Florida

By Patricia Tan

Over the years I have worked with real estate buyers from many countries around the world. Their home countries and the properties they buy may vary, but their questions remain the same. Here are the top five questions I hear from overseas customers considering a longer stay in Florida:

How long can I stay in my Florida vacation home, without running into visa issues?

Once an overseas visitor has purchased a vacation home here, they can apply at the U.S. Embassy in their home country for the B1/B2 visa. This will allow them to come and go at will, but they do need to count the days they “have feet on U.S. soil”. Staying for more than 182 days in any calendar year may mean they become resident for U.S. tax purposes, and they will have to file a U.S. tax return on their worldwide income –something most people choose not to do!

Who will look after my home when I’m not there?

It’s no surprise that professional Home Watch services abound in a state where many homes are left unoccupied for long periods of time. For a set fee per month, or per visit, these companies will send a representative to visit unoccupied homes periodically, to make sure all is well – air conditioning working, no plumbing or roof leaks for instance. These services should always be provided by a professional company, and not just a neighbor making a few extra dollars on the side. Read More

Taverna Grill

A Tale of 2 Andreas

By Kim Burns & Sandra Halliday

Photography by James Corwin Johnson

Taverna Grill is owned and operated by two chefs–Andrea Joly and Andrea Baroni. At an early age they developed their deep love for food while cooking. The sweet aroma and sounds from nonna’s cucina inspired them to venture into the culinary world. The love for travel brought them to hone their skills in many famous kitchens around the world leading to a delicious culinary partnership.

Upon entering we were warmly greeted by the soothing strains of New Age music lulling us with its tranquil sounds. Wanting to start the Italian meal off right, an aperitif chosen to get the juices flowing for improved digestion. Our server and mixologist, Terrill, set to work immediately concocting his magic naming the playful creations after us. Kim’s Campari was light mix of vodka, Taverna Syrup, and Campari garnished with lime and orange wedges. Sandra’s Singapore Sling à la Sarasota was made of Gin infused with rose and cucumber, Cointreau, pineapple juice, and club soda. The tastes were a bitter sweet start to our dining experience stimulating our appetites and preparing us for the treats ahead. Read More

The Birth of Acupuncture in America: The White Crane’s Gift

By Ed Bertha

Before there was OPRAH’s Dr. Memet Oz, before Dr. Andrew Weil started his own product line and before Dr. Robert Atkins became a household term that meant ‘cut the carbs’. Before all these so called health-oriented brand names landed on bookshelves and filled the supermarkets with their version of Alternative Medicine there was Dr. Steven Rosenblatt.

Based on both the development and creation of his best-selling book THE STARCH BLOCKER DIET (HarperCollins) and tied in with one of the hottest natural weight loss products currently on the market, ‘Starch Blocker’, DR. Rosenblatt embarked on a series of guest spots on such blue-chip talk shows as: THE TODAY SHOW (NBC), REGIS PHILBIN SHOW (ABC), DAYBREAK LA (CBS), and even the newly-revamped version of IN SEARCH OF (NBC). Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival Coming Up

By Ed Bertha

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving.”
Mother Teresa

Soon the 4th of July weekend will be upon us and that means speed on the water with the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival. Many equate the event with the races but it is much, much, more. It’s a week-long gala with something entertaining for all ages. From golf to fishing, to fireworks the event has something for everyone.

Produced by Suncoast Charities for Children the festival has a significant impact on our community and the ability for Suncoast Charities for Children to support local causes. This is a festival that continues to grow significantly each year.

Documented by Research Data Services the economic impact of the festival grew from $14.3 million in 2012 to $37.1 million in 2016. Hotel room nights echoed the same growth, increasing from 13,630 nights in 2012 to 18,300 in 2016. Hold on for this year’s figures as the event brings back the wet pits and viewing area at the 10th Street boat ramp in Centennial Park. Read More

Call it the perfect storm the way SaraBay Real Estate evolved into what it is today. That perfect storm took place over Sarasota Bay at the John Ringling Bridge connecting Lido Key and the city of Sarasota. Think of Mike and Judy Holderness, the original founders and owners of SaraBay, as the key and Barry and Sherry Grooms, current co-owners, as the city–different, yet connected. Read More

Your Secluded Gulf Oasis

By Ed Bertha

Taking the stairs to the grand entryway I enter the home through custom double doors and am immediately greeted by the expansive view, which is impeccably framed. Instantly I am mesmerized by the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico’s blues and Fiddler Bayou’s lush green vegetation. One can’t help but notice the inset architectural detail that makes this view picture perfect. As your gaze settles in, you glance upward and absorb the majestic 36 ft. ceiling in the main living area, complete with a four-sided clearstory windowed cupola cascading down natural ambient light. Kim’s Campari

By Kimberly Burns, OTR/L, CLT

“The classic Italian aperitivo drinks differ by region but usually include a mix with Aperol or Campari liquors.”

An aperitif or aperitivo is roughly translated as “to open”. Diners are prepared for dinner delights and transition from the stress of the day to the well-deserved meal. What a great Happy Hour!

As a part of my very long journey of transitioning my daily habits and discovering food intolerances, I have begun to appreciate the benefits that alcohol can give when directed correctly.

Since that night of our fine restaurant review, aperitif has been an addition to my food style with my many digestive problems and a substitution for drinking too much wine. When making changes to your lifestyle, trying to restrict drinking alcohol can be very difficult in social situations. Let’s face it, it’s a great weakness for a lot of us. Reframing your food style to include alcohols that may aide in digestion, as well as, drinking in moderation can be of great benefit to heal your gut and sooth your mind. Read More
