His ability to successfully marry technical details with imaginative design has driven the flourishing career of architect Bill Tagland. The New Jersey native has integrated himself into the fabric of Sarasota’s communities with homes that are as rich and diverse as the area’s residents. His innovative approach engages clients from the onset; Bill thrives on the challenge of bringing the visions of others to light. Read More

David Vallone Restorations

By Sheila Brannan Longo

Photography by Chad Spencer

Back in 1986, David Vallone worked as a trim carpenter for a high-end builder constructing a home in The Oaks. On the last few days of the job, Vallone noticed some men bringing in a very fine collection of antique furniture that was just restored. Talking with them, he realized restoring antiques would provide more enjoyment than doing construction work, and was hired by them soon afterwards. Read More

The 2015 Porsche Macan

Five Doors. No box. The Macan Concept

By Fred Krasne

Create a compact Sport SUV?

No, Porsche would rather think outside the box.

Porsche created what we always create: a True Sports Car. But this time with 5 doors, 5 seats, all-wheel drive, and yet still intimate with the road; boasting plenty of space for hobbies, leisure, and sport. But left no room for compromise. Compact, Concentrated, and Intensive, but all still Powerful. This is a sports SUV that generates what we’re looking for: that feeling of being alive. Read More

Fashion For A Cause

It’s time to get REAL with Beauty from the Inside/out, as Inner beauty is reflected in your outward appearance. When you discover the balance between inner and outer beauty, you will look and feel sensational all the time. You should always be increasing your beauty from the inside out because your body esteem, self-confidence, and self-esteem – which all come from inside, can affect how beautiful you appear to others. Did you know you are 20% more beautiful to other people than the person you see in the mirror every morning? WHY? … Because when you look at your reflection, all you see is your physical form, and all you’re doing is looking for flaws. When others see you, they also take in your personality, style, intelligence, sex appeal, wit … the entire you. Read More

Vintage Hair

(Part 3)

By Sheila Venancia

1970’s

Like the preceding sixties, the seventies was a diverse decade for hairstyles. New hair styles were being created through experimentation and hair styles were often a direct expression of the clients’ view of society at that time. Women’s 1970’s hairstyles varied from long, soft and feminine to short and androgynous.

Nostalgia was big in the 70’s, leading to a look back to various periods, especially the 1920’s through to 1950’s. This “looking back” past eras was seen in fashion, TV shows, films, and music. Long hair had been in vogue since the late 1960’s and its popularity continued through the 1970’s. Read More

What’s Your Dollar Worth?

By Patricia Tan

Currency Considerations for International Investors

In addition to looking at the real estate investment itself, an overseas investor must also consider the relative strength of the U.S. dollar against their home currency. Consideration has to be given to this at the time of purchase, and also at the projected time of sale. This adds a whole layer of complexity to the purchase and sale of U.S.A. real estate.

Currency exchange rates, the relative value of one currency versus another, are constantly changing. A major shift in an exchange rate during a real estate transaction can have a significant impact. Let’s consider the following example: Read More

Determining Cause…Who Is To Blame?

By William Henry, PhD

Overview
As design forensic experts we are often tasked with investigating sites where injuries and/or fatalities arise from unsafe building conditions. Often times, no photographic or other visual record exists of the actual incident. In these cases, the expert must rely on third party accounts from eyewitnesses who provide testimony as to their recollection of what occurred.

Documentation of onsite condition
There are some instances where actual videos record the incident from security cameras, or a passerby may have photographs immediately following the incident derived from sources such as cell phone pictures. In today’s highly technological world, some experts can utilize three-dimensional modeling techniques to recreate an accident scene. Further, with supporting evidence, the expert can take the next technological jump to reenactment via animation. Read More

“Knowledge is Powerful”

By Lalaena Gonzalez-Figueroa

Design by Christian Lunardi

She grew up in Sarasota, and for real estate professional Pamela Hagan, there’s no place like home. As the broker/owner of Waterfront 7 Realty, she is sharing her knowledge and skills with clients and agents alike, enthusiastically assisting them in realizing their individual goals.

Pamela launched her real estate career in 1982, while studying Economics in Gainesville. “I wasn’t the greatest student,” she recalls with her trademark smile, “but I aced the state licensing exam!” It was, she says a natural fit. “It clicked right away,” Pamela asserts. “I was born to be in real estate.” Read More

The Macalla

Secluded Luxury

By Ed Bertha

The quaint area known as “West of Trail”, closely and quietly neighboring downtown Sarasota is full of charming homes of varied styles. The area ranges from small salt box homes to mansions, many new, many dating back almost a hundred years. The charm of this neighborhood is amplified by a mixture of the softly dominating style of Spanish Revival, to a drop of a contemporary home here and there. Most of the homes are outlined by the city sidewalks, creating a sort-of ‘Welcome’ mat for residents to enjoy their community as well as visitors. The sidewalks lead to adventures through the neighborhood parks, restaurants, and shops. Read More

Letter From The Publisher Ed Bertha – Options

Options

Options. We all have options.

Sometimes you just need to reflect and take a different path. Starting with this issue REAL has done just that. We brought the sourcing of our distribution lists in house and have contracted with Andrick & Associates to handle our bulk mailing. Beyond knowing exactly where the magazine is going, we now have the ability to develop custom proprietary lists, expand our distribution and are well under way doing so.

Other times you need to look at what you do and how others can leverage the foundation you worked so hard to build. Over the past five plus years we diligently focused on establishing the REAL brand in print and online. Now it is time to actively promote our offerings enabling innovative clients to leverage our brand and expand their business horizons. As you can see below the plate of offerings is pretty comprehensive. Read More
