Grant To Support Little Sweep by Benjamin Britten. National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $80 million in grants as part of the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2018. The Italian government has bestowed the title of Cavaliere dell’ordine della Stella d’Italia (Knight of the order of the Star of Italy) on Maestro Victor DeRenzi, artistic director and principal conductor of Sarasota Opera. National Endowment For The Arts Supports Production Of The Dialogues of the Carmelites. National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu approved an Art Works award of $20,000 to support the winter 2017 production of The Dialogues of the Carmelites by Francis Poulenc. More than $82 million has been designated to fund local arts projects and partnerships around the country in the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2016. The Sarasota Opera announced that the block of Pineapple Avenue stretching from 1st Street to Main Street will be temporarily re-named “Verdi Place” in honor of Sarasota Opera’s completion of the Verdi Cycle during the 2016 Winter Festival Season by the City of Sarasota. Sarasota Opera Announces Two “Super” Casting Calls. The Sarasota Opera has announced dates for two “Super” casting calls for the upcoming 2016 Winter Festival Season. The first date is Tuesday, December 29th, from 5:00–5:30pm and the second date is Saturday, January 2nd, from 1:00pm–1:30pm. Both casting calls will be at the Sarasota Opera House. Sarasota Opera Seeking Male Bodybuilders. Sarasota Opera is seeking volunteer male bodybuilders to appear as supernumeraries (non-singing extras) for its winter season production of Verdi’s opera Aida. Rehearsals will be in the evenings in January of 2016 and will NOT be every night. There will be 12 performances total beginning on January 30 and concluding on March 19th. This is a volunteer position. This is the first time Sarasota Opera will present Verdi’s Aida and will be the biggest production in the company’s 57 year history. Mixed Use Complex Will House Sarasota Opera Artists. Rosemary Square, a new mixed-use complex on Boulevard of the Arts between Central and Lemon Avenues broke ground Friday, August 7, 2015. Developed by Dr. Mark Kauffman and partners, Rosemary Square will include retail and office space, and thirty condominium units which were purchased by Sarasota Opera as artists housing. Sarasota Opera purchased 30 units (16 three-bedroom, 8 two-bedroom, and 6 one-bedroom apartments) in the new development to house artists and members of the artistic staff during the company’s fall and winter season. HD Season To Include Productions From Around the World. Sarasota Opera announces the line-up for the 2015 season of “HD at the Opera House”. This series, which debuted in 2014 and more than quadrupled its projected income goal in its first year, has allowed Sarasota Opera to expand its programming from the fall and winter season to year-around. Sarasota Opera is seeking a limited number of enthusiastic outgoing people to serve as supernumeraries, or “supers”, the non-singing extras in opera productions, for its 2015 Winter Festival Season production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s fairy tale opera The Golden Cockerel and Verdi’s Don Carlos. Sarasota Opera is seeking enthusiastic outgoing people to serve as supernumeraries, or “supers”, the non-singing extras in opera productions, and acrobats for its 2015 Winter Festival Season production of Rimsky-Korsakov’s fairy tale opera The Golden Cockerel. As a continuation of its popular “HD at the Opera House” series, Sarasota Opera will host two showings of the 1954 classic “White Christmas” starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. The showings will be on Friday, December 12th at 7pm and Saturday, December 13th at 1:30pm.
