January 30-March 28, 2010 – Sumi-e Paintings On Display
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Presents Sumi-e Art Exhibit.
Florida’s Suncoast Sumi-e artists will exhibit their paintings at the Sumi-e Society Exhibition. The event will be held in the historic Selby house at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens January 30-March 28, 2010. The exhibition includes excellent examples of various Oriental Brush Painting “schools.” The participating members have studied Chinese, Korean and Japanese as well as contemporary styles.
Sumi-e is intellectual and spiritual as well as an artistic pursuit and is related closely to the ancient art of Chinese calligraphy. The brush strokes used in mastering a painting are based on the strokes used to produce the beautiful characters of Chinese writing. The goal of the painter is to use a few free-flowing, confident strokes to produce the essence of the flower, tree, landscape or scene, not an exact copy.
Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a respected center for research and education as well as a famous orchid showplace. The Gardens is located at 811 South Palm Avenue in Sarasota, Florida and is open to the public daily from 10am-5pm with the exception of Christmas day.
