Tomb Of The Unknowns And Veterans Day. Official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day center around the Tomb of the Unknowns. To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil. At 11 am on November 11th, a combined color guard representing all military services executes “Present Arms” at the tomb. The nation’s tribute to its war dead is symbolized by the laying of a presidential wreath and the playing of “Taps.” REAL Exclusive salutes our Veterans!

New College Hosts Emmy-Winning Journalist. Charlayne Hunter-Gault, a pioneer in the American civil rights movement and an award-winning journalist for The New York Times, NPR and CNN, will speak on Monday November 9th with New College students about her life and career. Her talk is at 5pm in the College’s Sudakoff Conference Center and an informal reception will follow. In 1961, Charlayne Hunter and Hamilton Holmes were the first two black students to enroll at University of Georgia. Sarasota Opera Seeking Male Bodybuilders. Sarasota Opera is seeking volunteer male bodybuilders to appear as supernumeraries (non-singing extras) for its winter season production of Verdi’s opera Aida. Rehearsals will be in the evenings in January of 2016 and will NOT be every night. There will be 12 performances total beginning on January 30 and concluding on March 19th. This is a volunteer position. This is the first time Sarasota Opera will present Verdi’s Aida and will be the biggest production in the company’s 57 year history. At the request of City Commissioner Susan Chapman, the board will once again discuss a statue/artwork proposed for the roundabout at Main Street and Orange Avenue, Embracing our Differences. The commission approved the design and placement of the artwork on October 19th.
