REAL La Dolce Vita – With Kim & Sandra

REAL La Dolce Vita

Live The Sweet Life

By Kim Burns & Sandra Halliday

La Dolce Vita with Kimberly Burns and Sandra Halliday. Kim and Sandra will take readers on a journey through their reviews of restaurants and businesses along with other venues and products in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. In their first venture, the reader will experience unique reviewing of restaurants through conveyance of taste, texture, aroma, and visual presentation of a restaurant’s dishes. Entertaining insight on the ambience and the general impression of the restaurant, as well as on the staff’s knowledge and attention to the diner’s needs, will engage the reader in a culinary journey.

Promoting the Sarasota Region as one of the top South West Florida destinations for the well-traveled and discerning gourmand, as well as, promoting local businesses is their goal. Reviews will discuss whether the restaurant was successful in creating the dining ambiance as marketed and if the staff had created a pleasant experience for the diner. The staff’s knowledge will be tested in pairing wine with the menu and the reviewers will also seek to discover how the restaurant stands out from its competition. The discerning gourmand diner also wants to know the culinary tradition of the chef, his or her specialty dishes, training, and if s/he had worked internationally and if the chefs support local farmers by purchasing locally farmed organic produce. REAL Comedy – Interview With Steve Mittleman

Steve Mittleman

Stand Up Comedy At Its Best

Interview by Ed Bertha

When LA’s Comedy Store hosted auditions for Steve Martin’s film ‘Roxanne’, dozens of great comics, Steve Mittleman included, faced a professional’s worst enemy, lack of time to prepare. The Store also had a limited number of spots for auditions. Steve stopped by anyway, someone cancelled, and he got the shot. After the auditions, the film’s producers asked for only one comedian they’d seen that evening.

Before he knew it, Mittleman found himself hauling a fire hose around Canada playing the quirky fireman in Steve Martin’s hit film.

Let’s spend a few minutes with Steve Mittleman. Read More

Attitude = Altitude

By Nicole Carbon

“If I had a crystal ball, I wouldn’t be a Realtor,” Lynne Koy said to a client just prior to our meeting. Lynne may not have a crystal ball, but what she does have is a strong work ethic, perseverance, and the ability to solve problems. She shared her story of how she built a prosperous business from the ground up, her philosophy, and the three sides to the triangle of her success.

Lynne started in the real estate business in Chicago as a single mother with two children and was discouraged by her instructor to enter the industry as a woman in her position. It didn’t stop her, she went on to build a thriving business. “Courage is taking those first steps to your happiness or your dream, even if you can’t see the path ahead,” she shares. Years later, she made the move to Long-boat Key to take care of her aging parents. Once again, she started from scratch, she didn’t know a thing about the area and had to rebuild her business, but quickly caught on to its appealing low-key vibe, and its thriving arts and cultural scene surrounded by some of the nation’s most beautiful beaches. Food is Medicine – Benefits of Ghee

By Kimberly Burns, OTR/L, CLT

“Let medicine be thy food and let food be thy medicine”

A term Hippocrates used to relay his belief that eating nutritious food is the basis for good health. For those of us with food allergies or intolerance, even the diets labeled as healthy or anti-inflammatory can still cause problems. A food allergy triggers the immune system to react to the proteins in a food and causes a histamine reaction. It is usually more severe and immediate reaction with a small amount of the food whereas food intolerance may require a higher quantity of the food to cause problems. The symptoms are typically less severe and not life threatening. Because the two share similar symptoms, it can be difficult to distinguish between them. Some common symptoms are nausea, stomach aches, diarrhea, or runny nose. Food intolerance can also resemble age related digestive changes such as gluten and lactose intolerance due to under production of enzymes, bloating due to decreased elasticity, and constipation due to slowing of contractions in the large intestine. Whether it is allergy, intolerance or aging, decreasing the amount of food that triggers these symptoms is helpful to maintain good health. Read More

What is Leadership?

By Craig M. Steinhoff

We’re not all “born” leaders. So how can we identify the skills and qualities to take our organization to the next level?

Now that 2017 is upon us, its time to focus on making a fresh start. Develop personal and professional resolutions that you can accomplish. If you’re responsible for a team – either a stay-at-home mom running a household or a Corporate CEO running a multi-billion dollar entity, focusing on your leadership skills is likely a great place to start. Creating good systems for your team or drawing up effective operational guidelines that will help team members get through the day-to-day detail of their jobs are great management activities.

However, leadership is more about creating and communicating a vision and motivating people to work towards it. Leadership is about developing highly motivated, goal oriented people, and creating a climate in which they can perform to their fullest potential. Read More

The “New” CoolAdvantage Petite Applicator

By Gail Coleman

CoolSculpting, now FDA-cleared to treat upper arm fat with the release of the “new” CoolAdvantage Petite Applicator.
Renowned Harvard University scientists, Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD, observed that some children got dimples due to eating popsicles. The idea that cold can selectively affect and eliminate fat cells without damaging the skin or surrounding tissue was the insight behind Cryolipolysis®, the proven science on which the CoolSculpting procedure is based.
CoolSculpting is the innovative cooling process developed by scientists at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you. Read More

Spring Has Sprung

Look Fresh And Hopeful For The Spring Season Of 2017

By Becca Z. Towery

IT’S officially spring and it is now time for rejuvenation and fresh-starts. I’m not saying that you should completely rehaul your wardrobe, but there is no better time to rejig your style and shed the weight of last year’s faux pas after 2016’s final curtain. All of your chunky knits, parkas, fluffy socks and darkest colours should be stored away to make room for the lighter pieces, both in weight and colour. Down with dull and drab, up with fresh and zesty!

Spring is the transitional period, the time of year where we have the opportunity to start anew and reinvent ourselves. Think light fabrics: cotton, poplin, merino, and other soft and supple materials. Patterns add much-needed colour to your outfit – think floral, paisley, camo, tattersall, flecked, and heathered, – but beware of overdose; no one wants to look like a peacock. Read More

Bride Makeup Trial

By Sheila Venancia

A makeup trial is a session with a potential makeup artist. Trials generally give the bride a sense for how the makeup artist would apply her makeup on her wedding day.

Some makeup artists are also hair stylist, allowing them to do a hair trial as well.

Makeup trials can range between $85 – $150. You can have as many makeup trials as you want to determine which artists are more suitable to your taste. Read More

Taxing Matters For Non-Residents Who Own U.S. Real Estate

By Patricia Tan

What season Is it? Some might say “Spring” as temperatures are in the 70s, others may say “Tourist Season” as they sit patiently in heavy traffic, but as I write this article I am working on my annual accounts, so I would say “It’s Tax Season!”

It is this time of year when I get questions from some of my overseas customers who are working on their tax returns too, and I thought it might be useful to spend a few minutes looking at how foreign real estate owners are viewed by the U.S. tax system.

First, I must say I am a REALTOR and not a CPA or tax advisor. When tax questions arise, I refer my customers to an expert in this field. I have worked for many years with Renea Glendinning Read More

Negligence Per Se In Florida

By William Henry, PhD

Not all negligence cases are equal. The facts can make a difference as to how a negligence case must be proved.

There are four elements to the proof of general negligence found in the common law:

1) Duty — The defendant owed a duty of care to the plaintiff;
2) A breach — A failure to fulfil the duty;
3) Causation — The breach led to the injuries; and
4) Damages — A monetized value of the injury. Read More

“Voyage Of The Eskimo III”

One could talk for hours about Captain Jerry Chitwood. Known locally for Chitwood Charters, most in Sarasota don’t know what this unpretentious individual has accomplished, and who he knows. Be it the huge painting that still hangs in Indiana’s Ben Davis High School commemorating his wrestling feats. Or, the tough middle linebacker at Indiana State University, who also was the team’s captain. Maybe it’s becoming a pilot at age 21 and being featured in Neiman Marcus’ “His/Her Gift of the Year” piloting an Egland Hovercraft. Maybe it’s being told by Sarasota bankers and yacht brokers that his business plan for a yacht charter company wouldn’t fly when he relocated to Sarasota many years ago to escape the harsh winters in Indiana.

Ah, next it’s his little black book whose page’s overflow with the likes of Read More

“Protect Your Family And Your Investment”

Concrete, we can trace the word back to the Latin verb concrescere, meaning “to grow together.” It’s been around since the Egyptians used gypsum and lime mortars in the pyramids and still forms the basis for construction today.

John Wolterman’s industry experience is a comprehensive blend of educational knowledge and practical experience. Growing up in the suburbs of Cincinnati, John learned the fundamentals of construction firsthand. His father owned a company specializing in concrete projects, and thus his interest in the industry was piqued at an early age.

John soon discovered a genuine affinity for the hands-on aspect of building, and after high school graduation he and his father started Wolterman Brothers Construction. The company’s growth was the direct result of John’s desire to facilitate a concierge approach in the home building process. Under his guidance Wolterman Brothers grew to more than 60 employees and was grossing over $20 million per year, in rural Ohio. These opportunities enabled John to assimilate a complete understanding of the complexities involved in the custom construction industry.

We all know how Hurricane Katrina devastated the lives of thousands of people in New Orleans. Impacted by witnessing the damage firsthand while vacationing there, John dedicated himself to researching safer, more durable home construction methods. Read More
