Less Is Better In The Housing World

By William Henry, PhD

Compare the 1959 Cadillac to the models of 2016. The name is the same but that’s about it. The new ones are much smaller and more sophisticated than the 1959 behemoth. Housing is following the same path.

Smaller homes are becoming attractive to buyers and developers, and for some of the same reasons.

There are over 70 million Baby Boomers in this country with their successors close on their heels. And then there are the young, first time home buyers – together these two demographic groups seem to be turning the housing market on its ear. Read More

Gail Coleman

Forever Young

By Ed Bertha

Layout by Christian Lunardi

Meet Gail Coleman, the founder of Estetika Skin & Laser Specialists. Through her leadership and determination, Estetika is the only Black Diamond Thermage and Fraxel Provider in Milwaukee, WI and Sarasota, FL, the only CoolSculpting Center of Excellence and a Premier Crystal award winning CoolSculpting provider in Florida and Wisconsin.

I ask Gail what makes Estetika different? “Experience, education and our safety record. We have performed more non-surgical facelifts (Thermage) and cryolypolysis (CoolSculpting) procedures than any provider in the Milwaukee or Sarasota markets,” she says proudly.

Born Gail Ann Martin, she grew up on the north side of Kenosha, WI, the second of four children. Her father was a laborer for Wisconsin Natural Gas Company and, with drive, worked his way up the corporate ladder as the children were growing up. He taught Gail that there are no obstacles in life, only those we create. Gail shares, “My father taught me that I could be anything I wanted to be.” Read More

REAL Communities – Ashton Oaks

Ashton Oaks by Heritage Builders

A Private Enclave In The Heart Of Sarasota

By Ed Bertha

Ashton Oaks is a private, gated new home community comprised of just 20 new single-family homes. These stunning luxury homes are conceived and delivered by Sarasota’s premier home builder, Heritage Builders. Ashton Oaks provides a rare opportunity to build a new home with the ability to customize in this coveted Sarasota area. This exclusive enclave is ideally located in one of Sarasota’s finest school districts and just minutes from downtown, the area’s finest shopping, cultural attractions and Gulf Beaches.

“Ashton Oaks’ location is one of the few properties left of any scale in central Sarasota. It’s in a great school district and its location is convenient to all Sarasota has to offer,” shares Steve Brown, Principal at Heritage Builders. “We wanted to build a nice gated enclave of upper end homes that homebuyers can customize. Since opening our model home in February, we have attracted a wide range of buyers and, in this short time, have sold 50% of our home sites. We’ve attracted a mix of families, empty nesters and retirees. It’s a nice spread of residents and everything we thought Ashton Oaks would be,” he continues. Read More

REAL Performance – 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera

The New 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera

Ultimate Performance Meets Tasteful Luxury

By Vincent Catena

Porsche Certified Brand Ambassador
Suncoast Porsche

“Once again, everything is at stake. Setting a new standard. Creating a Sports Car like one never before seen. A Sports Car that has fascinated for generations. A vehicle that is our passion. The new 911.”

The new 2017 Porsche 911 Carrera is taking performance and everyday usability to new heights. Innovative flat-six engines derived from four decades of turbocharging used in racing not only make this the fastest 911 Carrera ever, but also provide abundant torque for superior passing power. The completely new engine generation featuring twin-turbo technology provides a 20 hp increase compared to the previous models. The 3.0 liter engine in the standard Carrera now develops 370 hp. Using turbochargers with modified compressor wheels, a model-specific exhaust system, and a different tune for the engine management system, the 911 Carrera S delivers 420 hp from the same displacement.

Many exterior features of the 911 Carrera have been visually refined from new headlights with four-point daytime running lights to integrated door handle recesses, a redesigned rear deck lid with vertical louvers, and new rear lights – including the characteristic four-point brake lights. The new standard Porsche Communication Management system with a multi-touch display offers an expanded range of functions and simplified usability. Read More

Letter From The Publisher Ed Bertha – What’s Next?

What’s Next?

By Ed Bertha

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”
George Bernard Shaw

While we had a fun run with REAL’s flipping book format it’s off to something new and different with the next edition. As one can imagine the flipping book was not intuitive to a designer or the printer. What was right facing became left facing. Pages are literally upside down and so on. Just a bit of controlled confusion, yet fun!

In the next issue look for something innovative and fresh. And no, we did not copy the idea. It was a collaborative team effort. Stay tuned! Read More

Signature Greek Salad

“I feel Greek food and lamb are nearly synonymous so it was a perfect twist to add baby lamb chops to the more traditional Greek salad. The Tzatziki Sauce is also a complement. Put it all together and you have a fun dish full of different textures and flavors.”

This and other tantalizing recipes are available in the cookbook Chef! The Stories and Recipes of Chef Paul Mattison, available for purchase at Mattison’s Forty-One or at www.Mattisons.com. Read More

Road to Wellness, Part 1. Are You A Foodie?

By Kimberly Burns, OTR/L, CLT

A “foodie” is a person who has a refined interest in food. A foodie seeks new food experiences as a hobby rather than simply eating out of convenience or hunger, says wikipedia.org. Agreed Wikipedia, I am a foodie! I have a refined interest in food to supply me with the right nutritional content and chose to eat out of a need for those reasons rather than convenience. And so should you!

With summer on its way, many people are looking forward to upcoming bikini beach days and have dieting in mind. What I have learned over the years from being in the healthcare field and managing personal health issues is that sometimes you need to follow a routine developed by you personally versus trying to fit yourself into someone else’s form. It can be very hard to stick to someone’s version of normal levels or average portion size on a particular diet because you are your own unique person with your own level of nutrient need. A plan based upon percentages of someone else’s normal won’t work for you. There are also those diets that will tout being healthy and natural yet they set you up on a routine where you are taking supplements to supply you with the nutrients you need. Such drastic changes or restrictions can set you up for failure before you even begin.

The Glamour Of Eyelashes

By Sheila Venancia

Does it feel like everyone from celebrities to your next door neighbor has long, luscious lashes these days? There’s no doubt about it….. Eyelashes are having a moment right now. If you are thinking of joining this growing trend, eyelash extensions are a luxurious and improved alternative to false eyelash strips.

What is the big difference between false eyelash strips and eyelash extensions?

Traditional false or strip eyelashes are arranged in a prefabricated strip that is glued in to place right on your eyelid, just above your natural eyelash. You can buy individual lashes or eyelash strips at any drugstore or retail beauty supply store. Besides natural hair colors, they often come in not-so-natural fun colors, patterns, designs and some even have glittering crystals. Read More

The Changing Face Of International Real Estate

By Patricia Tan

As we wave good bye to our winter visitors, we hope they enjoyed our balmy, sunny shores, and that they will be back again. While many of those visitors come here from the cold northern States, we still welcome a large number from other countries – Canada, United Kingdom, Germany and even as far away as Australia and South Africa, to name a few. In the past, many of these international visitors, just like their American counterparts, have fallen in love with our area and start to think about purchasing a second home or investment property here.

They still do this, but things are changing . . .

The strength of the U S Dollar has led many prospective foreign buyers to think twice about if and how they might purchase a property here. Not to be deterred by currency movement however, many foreigners still choose to buy, but they may buy in a different way. Read More

The Color Of You

By Becca Z. Towery

As a Fashion Stylist/Image Consultant I specialize in Personal Style Concepts. What is Personal Style? “It is the triumph of individual style. It’s all about you, the very special and unique you. It’s about finding your own natural style, the look that best compliments your personality and lifestyle.”

Personal Style is not just about what to where, but how to wear it. Style, Fit and Color is key for creating a personal style that best represents your qualities, attributes, and self-confidence.

In this REAL Style issue I would like to talk about the importance of COLOR, because identifying your true color palate is a very important aspect of defining your personal style. Did you know color has the power to enhance or detract from your personal appearance, to lift or depress the spirit, and to carry messages to others? Read More

The Architect’s Role In Construction

By William Henry, PhD

The public’s perception of an architect is often quite simple. Of course the real world can be quite different than traditional perceptions.

The simplest perception of an architect is a person hired to design a structure by the future structure’s owner, who also hires a contractor to undertake its construction. There are situations in which this perception is totally accurate, but generally only in the simplest situations such as a party desiring to build a home or place of business. However, many projects are much more complex.

Commercial projects can involve many complex issues some of which might include land acquisition, zoning and land use issues, and compliance with many different applicable building codes, other regulatory laws and ordinances. Read More

Breaking Par

By Ed Bertha

Photography by Giovanni Lunardi

Layout by Christian Lunardi

You might be hard pressed to find two real estate agents in today’s market who are as dedicated to the principle of “trust” as Drew and Nikki Betz. Not only do they believe trust is a critical element in the agent-client relationship, but it is also vital to creating honest and respectful relationships within the local agent community.

Drew and Nikki grew up in real estate families. Drew’s parents bought and sold 6 homes while he was growing up. Drew quickly gravitated to the construction industry and started out working with a custom home builder. At age 22 he bought, remodeled and sold his first home. Continuing with his hands on approach, while attending Minnesota State University for his Real Estate and Real Estate Development Degree, Drew stepped out and established his home automation business, Custom Pro Audio Video.

Nikki’s parents on the other hand assembled multiple homes starting with the “Al Capone” home (nicknamed so for its speakeasy) in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, to laid back Key West, to bustling Ft Lauderdale, to idyllic Manasota Key, building and remodeling homes along the way. It is with these experiences that Nikki gravitated to the creative side of building, focusing on color, design and trends, ultimately ending up with a marketing degree from Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. With the addition of their first daughter, Alexis, Nikki became heavily involved in Custom Pro Audio Video, taking on the marketing and creative side of the flourishing business. Read More
