Steve Mittleman Stand Up Comedy At Its Best Interview by Ed Bertha When LA’s Comedy Store hosted auditions for Steve Martin’s film ‘Roxanne’, dozens of great comics, Steve Mittleman included, faced a professional’s worst enemy, lack of time to prepare. The Store also had a limited number of spots for auditions. Steve stopped by anyway, someone cancelled, and he got the shot. After the auditions, the film’s producers asked for only one comedian they’d seen that evening. Before he knew it, Mittleman found himself hauling a fire hose around Canada playing the quirky fireman in Steve Martin’s hit film. Let’s […]

What’s Next? By Ed Bertha “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything” George Bernard Shaw While we had a fun run with REAL’s flipping book format it’s off to something new and different with the next edition. As one can imagine the flipping book was not intuitive to a designer or the printer. What was right facing became left facing. Pages are literally upside down and so on. Just a bit of controlled confusion, yet fun! In the next issue look for something innovative and fresh. And no, we did not copy […]

To A New Year! By Ed Bertha & Kim Burns “Celebrate what you want to see more of” Tom Peters Once again we sit here and look back at another year passing us by. To some the New Year is a time to party, watch a few football games, and maybe make a few resolutions (Knowing deep down inside the resolutions won’t stick). It is all those things for us, but the New Year is also a time for reflection, a yardstick for measuring what I’ve learned so far, not just in the last year but all along the winding […]

Giovanni Lunardi – Looking Through The Lens By Ed Bertha “What I like about photographs is that they capture a moment that’s gone forever, impossible to reproduce.” Karl Lagerfeld “It was through a random act of kindness that I met Giovanni Lunardi in mid-2009.” In our second year of production Giovanni began shooting our cover feature stories. It was the care he showed in what we were producing that made the switch easy. Our first issue together was renowned architect, Carl Abbott. 55 issues later Giovanni celebrates his 50th year of photography by gracing this issue’s cover.

The Dog Days Of Summer By Ed Bertha “It’s a smile, it’s a kiss, it’s a sip of wine… It’s summertime!” Kenny Chesney The term “Dog Days” was coined by the ancient Romans, who called these hot and humid days “Caniculares Dies” or “Days of the Dogs” after the star Sirius. Sirius resides in the constellation of Canis Major, the “Big Dog”, which is one of the hunting dogs of Orion, the Hunter in the constellation that bears his name. During the Dog Days of Summer Sirius rises and sets with the sun, and the two stars are in conjunction. […]
