On February 1st at 6pm join those in support of continuing Thunder by the Bay at the scheduled Sarasota City Commission meeting at City Hall, 1565 First Street, Sarasota. There is significant opposition to continuing the festival from the City. An informal, non-scientific, survey conducted after the festival by Downtown Economic Development Coordinator, Norm Gollub, paints a picture those opposing Thunder want to see. First Celebrated in 2001. Holocaust Memorial Day, January 27th, is a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in The Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur. It was first held in January, 2001, and has been on the same date every year since. The date reflects the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp by the Soviet Union in 1945, the date also chosen for the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and some other national Holocaust Memorial Days.

The Sarasota Opera announced that the block of Pineapple Avenue stretching from 1st Street to Main Street will be temporarily re-named “Verdi Place” in honor of Sarasota Opera’s completion of the Verdi Cycle during the 2016 Winter Festival Season by the City of Sarasota. The Jazz Club of Sarasota presents the Sarasota Jazz Project Big Band and music from “West Side Story” in a special afternoon concert at Riverview Performing Arts Center, 1 Ram Way, Sarasota.
