Woodstock, A Pivitol Point In American Culture. Woodstock was an American music festival held August 15–18, 1969, which attracted an estimated audience of 400,000-500,000. What began as a paid event drew so many attendees from across the world that the fences were torn down and it became a free concert open to the public. Billed as “an Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music”, it was held at Max Yasgur’s 600-acre dairy farm in Bethel, New York, 43 miles (70 km) southwest of Woodstock.
