Cat Depot Still Participating In Two Rescue Cases. Due to health issues, the cats under medical care must remain in the temporary emergency shelter in the Education Center another four weeks. Volunteers are urgently needed to help with cleaning and feeding. There are morning and evening shifts available everyday. Shifts are every morning at 7:30 a.m. and evenings at 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 3:00 p.m. on weekends. To sign up for a shift online, click HERE. Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Partners With Friends Of Sarasota County Parks. ATTENTION ALL!!! This year’s Lido Beach Clean Up is going to be held on August 22nd from 9:00 am until 11:00 am with food and fun following at the Daiquiri Deck in St. Armands! Mixed Use Complex Will House Sarasota Opera Artists. Rosemary Square, a new mixed-use complex on Boulevard of the Arts between Central and Lemon Avenues broke ground Friday, August 7, 2015. Developed by Dr. Mark Kauffman and partners, Rosemary Square will include retail and office space, and thirty condominium units which were purchased by Sarasota Opera as artists housing. Sarasota Opera purchased 30 units (16 three-bedroom, 8 two-bedroom, and 6 one-bedroom apartments) in the new development to house artists and members of the artistic staff during the company’s fall and winter season. Habitat For Humanity Welcomes The Ordunos. On Tuesday August 11, 2015 at noon Habitat for Humanity Sarasota will dedicate a home to Maria Orduno and her family. Since January, dedicated volunteers have spent 3,014 hours building this house in the Alta Vista Elementary School district. This is the perfect location for future homeowner since she works at the school. Her journey with Habitat Sarasota began in October 2014, as Maria reflects back she says, “Thank you is not saying enough, this is a dream come true.” Along the way, Maria has provided 300 volunteer hours toward her “sweat equity” commitment. The Community Foundation of Sarasota County announced that this year’s 24-hour Giving Challenge will occur on September 1st until September 2nd. Last year, our community raised more than $3,127,000 in the 2014 Giving Challenge, thanks to six generous foundations, more than 18,000 unique donors, and 412 nonprofit organizations.

Professor Uzi Baram Receives FHC/NEH Research Grant. Uzi Baram, professor of anthropology at New College of Florida, received a $15,000 grant for a research project, “Tragedy and Survival: Bicentennial of the Southward Migration of Black Seminoles on the Florida Gulf Coast.” The “Tragedy and Survival” project stems from Baram’s successful public anthropology program “Looking for Angola,” which successfully identified traces of the 17th-century Angola community of escaped slaves, known as maroons, near Manatee Mineral Springs.
