Remember Pearl Harbor. The Day of Infamy that launched the epic conflict with Japan took place at Pearl Harbor in the early morning hours of December 7, 1941. The tranquil waters of Pearl Harbor were forever disrupted by the tides of war. That morning all 8 U.S. Navy battleships were damaged, with 4 sunk. The Japanese also sank or damaged 3 cruisers, 3 destroyers, 1 anti-aircraft training ship, and 1 minelayer. 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed. 2,402 Americans were killed (The Arizona 1,177) and 1,282 wounded. Tomb Of The Unknowns And Veterans Day. Official, national ceremonies for Veterans Day center around the Tomb of the Unknowns. To honor these men, symbolic of all Americans who gave their lives in all wars, an Army honor guard, the 3d U.S. Infantry (The Old Guard), keeps day and night vigil. At 11 am on November 11th, a combined color guard representing all military services executes “Present Arms” at the tomb.
